What does "Variable Flow Nipple" mean?

I am looking to buy some BornFree nipples level 2 and they are out of stock on the site I am looking at, but they have a pack of Variable Flow Nipples.  What are those?  It says it combines Level 1, 2 and 3 in one nipple.  How is that possible?

Thanks :)

  • What makes the nipples flow at different rates is the way you position the nipple in the mouth. If you need a slow flow then you put the nipple in the mouth with the 1 drop facing up, if you need a fast speed then you put the nipple in the mouth with the 2 drops facing up and so on..

So it depends on how the nipple is placed in the baby's mouth.

  • when you insert the nipple into the ring, a series of holes determine the airflow that allows either a very slow, medium or fast flow out of the nipple. if you turn it to 1, for example, all of the holes are sealed, so more suction is needed to draw liquid out. If you turn it to 2, one of the holes is held open by a small raised dot that allows air to flow in- thus requiring less suction to draw liquid out, and so on.

they're GREAT- I recommend them. I bought a couple of munchkin brand ones at target, to use with BPA free bottles when they were harder to find a  couple years ago.

new babies like a slower flow usually, and then faster as they get more efficient at drinking.

  • maybe the born free ones are different from the munchkin ones- I see a PP has a totally didfferent answer- I know the munchkin ones flow is determined by the nipple's placement in the ring before it is placed on the bottle- maybe the born free ones are totally different- that seems weird, since babies pretty much put the whole nipple in their mouth...I don't see how it would make a difference?
  • I just looked the born free ones up on amazon- all the reviews are bad- I HIGHLY recommend the Munchkin brand ones, though.

  • the born free ones actually work by having a slit in the nipple instead of a hold. depending on which side you have up, you get a different flow. on level 3 for example, when the baby suck, the slit opens up like a coin purse. i use these because i bought a bunch but they are not my favorite. they are pretty  messy even on level one and two.
