Many of you know Brandon has slept in his carseat since he was 1 month old and his acid reflux was suspected. We have tried many, many, many times to break him of this awful habit. Well.. now we HAVE to. He climbed out of the pumpkin seat yesterday. I have no idea how he did it, but he did. DH found him rolling on the floor and Seabiscuit (aka the FP Seahorse) where he would normally be laying. He was happy as can be rolling on the floor and not napping like he would normally be (and I'm sure you can picture the cute little grin on his face when my dh found him...)
DH tried to get him to sleep in his crib last night for almost 2 hours. It doesn't help that he's congested and really needs to be on an incline right now to help ease the breathing issue, but ultimately DH caved because he just couldn't breathe well at all. We've tried to let him CIO, but he just gets more and more ticked and we wind up caving.
We've tried letting him sleep on his belly or side (he can roll so it really doesn't matter). I've tried rubbing his back while he drifts to sleep. We've tried versions of CIO to no avail. We've tried an incline under the mattress (all he does is roll down it...). We were putting the carseat in the crib but with that crib recall we really don't want to do that. He's 18 pounds without the seat.
So... any ideas on how to break him of this terrible habit? I know he can't sleep in the seat forever... Help!!!
Re: Sleep help... any ideas?
Have you tried putting him into a similar "feeling" spot? Leah only slept in her papasan seat the first few weeks and I was able to strap her into that. Would he use that? Another choice (not sure if he rolls or not, or if he's too bit, would be something like this:
Let's see if that works..
Okay, I think that worked.
Leah needed that snuggled-in feeling until she was around 6 months and she slept on a sleep incline. She started to roll around and off of it and that's when we got rid of it.
Okay, now that I look at that picture, that baby is a pretty small newborn. Brandon would probably dangle off the edge, lol. Anyway, maybe aim for a similar snuggly spot for him.
Does he swaddle? That might help. We had to just rip the bandaid off cold turkey and move her from the swing to the crib at around 4 months. We tried one of those incline things at first but she was already moving around too much and would wiggle down. It's hard, but the longer he goes in the carseat, the harder it will be to break him of the habit.
Another thought, our pedi suggested putting Maggie in her carseat (strapped in, of course) and putting it in the crib for a few nights to get her used to being in there.
Jess... tonight we're trying 2 things- the wedge for under the mattress and a positioner that goes to 6 months that is also inclined. He's almost 6 mos, but it was the best I could do at Target. If that positioner doesn't work, I spent $10 on it so it's not the end of the world to me.
If he falls asleep, I think I'll be nervous all night about him sleeping but if it works that will be the important part... we'll see. He's finishing his bottle now (we had a strange night!)
Unfortunately he won't swaddle. He hates it. He busted out of the miracle blanket at 1 week old. I should've known then that we were in trouble, LOL.
We actually did have the carseat in the crib for a few nights and then tried to break that. It didn't work either. Now, our crib is one of the Storkcraft ones (and no, we haven't gotten our kit yet to fix it). The brackets are supposedly faulty. They look fine, but I'm not sure if I trust the carseat and my 18 lb son in the crib together.
Oh, and if that doesn't work, I'm contemplating driving to BRU tomorrow to look at this:
Honestly, I wouldn't spend the money. Maggie had a similar one and would wiggle and get her head stuck between the supports, which scared me.
So he won't sleep. We've been at it for an hour, alternating back and forth.
Plan B tonight is the PNP in our bedroom. Sleeping near us always seems to help, and maybe we can train him to lay flat that way. UGH. This is exhausting. Thanks for your help ladies!

Thank you for your ideas ladies!!! We still have to find a solution, but at least I have other ideas on how to resolve it... I'll keep you posted, because I'm sure it will be an AWWW post for me when he sleeps for an extended period of time in his crib without the seat...
