After transition to big bed, how long until they stayed in it?

The first 2 nights of the big boy bed went ok for us. I put up a gate at DS's bedroom door and he got out and stood at the door for a few minutes and then went to bed. Then last night, he found out he can push it hard enough to knock it down. I did the whole Super Nanny technique of just putting him back in bed over and over without saying anything, while gradually inching farther and farther out. It took an exhausting hour and a half until he tired himself out.

If you went through this, how long until your DC figured out bedtime means staying in bed?

  • DD sleeps with her door closed and there's a babylock on the knob so she can't get out. If she gets out of bed and plays, I don't mind. But if she's crying at the door, I silently walk in and put her back in bed, kiss her, say goodnight and leave. Over and over. It took maybe 3 nights of this and she figured it out. It's only been about 3 weeks since she moved to the big bed, and I rarely have to put her back in bed.

I've never watched Supernanny, but for my DD I don't think it would work for me to be in the room with her. She'd be hysterical.

Have you tried having your DH put him back in bed? For some reason, when DD is really worked up it allllllways works when DH puts her back to bed, but when she sees me she falls apart and wants me to hold her.

  • Believe me, I would love to have DH sharing in this "wonderful" time, but unfortunately he's at work 5 nights a week, so bedtime is all me :(
  • My DH is OOT at least four days a week, so I totally understand.

  • We started last Sunday so it's been almost a week so far. Bedtime has been fine from the beginning. He goes right to bed w/ no problem. Our problem is naptime. The first couple days were great...we thought we were home free. Then he started getting up. We kind of did the Supernanny thing except I didn't stay in the room. (We shut the door, but go figure, he just learned how to open the doors last weekend too.) Whenever he opened his door I just put him back in bed and didn't say a word to him. After the 5th or 6th time he stayed and fell asleep. We had to do this for the last couple days. Today though he went right to sleep...sooo...hopefully he's getting better.
