So my dr. prescribed me antibiotics earlier this week for the mastitis. I have been taking them since Wednesday night. (Or Tuesday night?)
Poor Foster is really having a tough time since then. He is so gassy and fussy and I know they are just hurting his tummy so much.
I am feeling so much better and my breast isn't red or tender anymore, so I want to quit taking the meds. But my dr. says no way bc it will come right back.
But what do I do about the gassiness?? Just pump and dump and feed him from my freezer stash? Will it get better the longer I take the meds? Will his tummy get used to it?
Re: Bf'ing, mastitis, antibiotic ?'s -
You definitely need to take the entire dose of antibiotics. It will come back if you don't. Have you tried gripe water or gas drops for the gas? I hope both of you get better soon
try some mylecon and see if that helps. per my aunt, who is an LC, i always caution against gripe water as the 'side effects' of herbal rememdies on infants have never been clinically tested. mylecon is not absorbed by the body at all.
you could try pump & dump, assuming your supply is pretty established. i would venture over to kellymom.com and ask this question. they are gurus and i'm certain they can give you a lot of good advice about timing of takign the meds vs feedings and lots of other hints to help you make it through
Absolutely take all the antibiotics. Not only would it come back, but it could become more resistant to the antibiotics.
Honestly? I could just be really bad timing. Micah is the same age and she's gotten more fussy (even for her laidback self). I think they are just realizing they are outside the womb.
And when I had mastitis with Mia, it didn't change her fussiness at all (though she hated nuring on the side with the infection. weird).
Go with the mylecon. Make sure he burps really well and you can massage his tummy and bicycle his legs (though you probably already know all this). I wouldn't pump and dump, because that's a long time of just bottles and I wouldn't want the baby to get too used to using the bottle vs breastfeeding since the bottle is easier.
