Wow - first night of HORRIBLE sleep

OK so I know I'm in no position to complain - I have been sleeping like a rock for the past 33+ weeks, but last night was HORRIBLE.  I woke up at 2:45 with my hips and lower belly aching.  I went to the bathroom and tried to go back to sleep, but the discomfort was so bad that it kept me wide awake for hours - I finally got 30 mins of sleep before I had to get up for work.

Partly because I haven't had any issues so far, I had no idea what to do - I tried a pillow between my knees, but that didn't make much of a difference.  Before I go re-inventing the wheel, do you ladies have any suggestions for ways to alleviate the pain?

TIA!

  • this week has been the same for me...the only way i can get back to sleep is with a pillow under my belly, between my knees, and one behind my back..poor DH is getting slowly evicted from the bed...

  • I definately want to see these responses! As of last night my hips starting hurting from pressure, of laying on my side. Of course I'm down to like 45 minutes of sleep on my back. I have no idea how to get through the next three months!
  • First night? pffft.
and no... nothing really helps. not for me anyway.

  • I'm jealous you' only had a first night! I use a pillow under belly, behind my back (wedged under a little) and one between my legs. Then I hug another over the top side to give my upper arm support. I'm upto 5 pillows. still got some time, too. GL
  • Pillows is the best one. Get more pillows if you need to. I am also switching sides from left to the right. Go to the bathroom often so bladder wont press on anything else making you you even more uncomfortable. Bath before the bed might also help.
  • I've found the pillow between my knees that used to be my saving grace now makes my hips hurt worse. Now I have a pillow tucked under my belly and sorta under my knees and that seems to help take the pressure off my hips. I basically lay almost all the way on my back, hug the pillow and then roll over to the side. Sounds weird but it props me up appropriately.

Oh...and I take one Tylenol PM because my doctor says it's ok.

  • Try a pillow under your belly as well as one between your knees.  Of course, I still have to roll from one side to the other every hour or two to prevent the aching anyway.  I'm only 30 weeks, but measuring 36 (the effect of twins), and I've been dealing with serious sleep issues for about the past month.
  • Thanks for the great suggestions, ladies!  I'll definitely add some more pillows tonight - poor DH will just have to deal with sleeping on a tiny little corner of the bed :).  I figure it can't be much worse for him than having me toss and turn all night!
  • I can't offer suggestions because nothing is helping me - for a few weeks now the hip/lower back/sciatica pain has gotten progressively worse. The past few nights have been ridiculous - I'm barely sleeping and praying for labor to start so I can have some relief. Like PP, the pillows have started making things worse for me....I don't have a clue what to do.
  • Most nights I have the same problem, but here is how I get some sleep.  I fall sleep on my right side hugging a body pillow with the body pillow between my legs and then have my husband spoon me.  By the middle of the night my hip starts to hurt so I flip sides, normally it takes only one flip to get me throught the night.  Also i asked my doctor if there was anything that I could take to help me sleep through the night and he gave me a Rx for Ambien.  I just take half the pill each night and it works like a charm.
