3rd Trimester

How prepared were you six weeks out??

Technically, Im five weeks out for my CS... but taken that I already started dialating... I was wondering how prepared should I be?

Let me put it to you this way.  I have one outfit and one diaper (the free one that Huggies sends you in the mail) and that's it.

I have no nursing bras, or shirts, or PJs.

I have no additional outfits for baby girl, or blankets, or diapers, or anything.

The nursery, finally got primered last night... and I took out my hospital bag the other day and its still empty.

I was planning to get things moving after the babyshower (March 7th), but I was wondering if Im waiting too long/late to get started on some minor packing/preparing.

What do you think?

Re: How prepared were you six weeks out??

  • Same boat.  I haven't done much.  Nursery has crib and dresser but we have no clothes, no diapers, no nursing bras, etc.  I was thinking that after my shower (which is this weekend and I have one on March 7) I would get everything together and whatever I am missing.  I was wondering the same thing, though.

  • Oh boy - you have a lot to do!  We were completely ready 6 weeks out (as far as stuff goes).  I don't know why people wait so long before having baby showers, we did ours at 6 months so we had time to sort through what we got and what we still needed.

Make a battle plan in order of what things you MUST have when baby comes home.

    1. diapers, bottles, and a can of formula (just in case)

    2.  clothes - at least a few outfits for baby and a few things for you since you will not want to be shopping for a little while.

    3.  pack hospital bag - outfit for you both to go home in at least.

Painting and decorating can wait until everything else is done, even after the baby is already here, as long as you have your crib set up.

  • I just started getting my items together now. Our baby shower is this weekend, so once we get through that, we will wash her clothes, get the car seat ready, etc. My child birth class said to have bags packed by week 35. I'm slowly starting to get my things together.
  • We should be done the nursery if not this weekend then sometime next week.  I have a TON of newborn clothes (hand me downs) and I'm stocking up on bigger sizes cos I think he's going to be a chunker. Things are slowly starting to come off my registry and we've bought a couple big items (carseat, stroller frame, etc) but still need to stock up on that kind of stuff.

I'm thinking about packing my hospital bag this weekend - only because we're moving next week (getting nursery done first) and I want to know that if we're still scattered and not unpacked yet a few weeks from now I can at least find my hospital stuff!

  • My shower was around 30 weeks, and thank god it was because it took a good week to wash everything, put things away, and put everything together.  I also had my nursery furniture set up before the shower.  Everyone is dfferent though.  If I didn't have that stuff done, I would freak out because I need to be prepared.... for everything
  • Trust me on this one - you're not going to want to be running around shopping for stuff at the last minute when you are even bigger and more immobile the closer you get to your due date.

Pick up the must-haves now while you have the energy - that way if you don't get what you need at the shower you are okay until baby comes home.

  • i would definitely get that kid some clothes!! just get lots of simple onsies and some recieving blankets, thats really all she is going to wear for the first few weeks...

i waited till after my baby shower to buy most of the clothes though, DH and i got alot of the big stuff since i got to my baby shower by plane and wouldnt be able to transport big gifts : )

do you have a carseat yet? thats another thing i would have on hand...you never know how early you could go into labor, and they wont let you leave the hospital without it

i still dont have any nursing bras or anything, im thinking ill get some of that at the beggining of march

  • I had about as much as you do before my shower.  I was holding off because everyone said how many clothes and blankets they got at their showers.  Well, I didn't.  I got a few clothes, but they were all too big (6-9 mos, 9-12 mos).

I've been stocking up on clothes for the last week.  I went to Ross, The Children's Place, and some ghetto store near my work that actually had really cute baby clothes.  I'm still not sure if I have everything, but I have enough to get by until DH or I can run out to the store.

As for the nursery, we've had the furniture for a while, but DH just finished the closet on Monday.  We're heading to BRU tomorrow morning to buy the rest of what we need.

Considering you're 5 weeks out from you c/s and your shower is in 2 weeks, you probably can't do much until after that.  Try to get the nursery done so it's ready to put all the stuff in.  Then you'll at least have a few weeks to finish shopping after your shower.

It's overwhelming, but you can do it.  Good luck!

  • ok 6 weeks out I still hadn't had my shower plus all the crap below

now being 2 weeks out, we are still living with my IL's while our bathroom and closet are being remodeled (should be done this sun) all of DH and I's clothes are all over our bedroom and living room, remodeling crap is all over the kitchen, the baby stuff is all over the dinning room and I have NO idea what's even in there. The upstairs (where the nursery is) is completely gutted down to the studs and we won't be able to start working on it again for at least 5-6 months for financial reasons (this DAMN economy) To sum it up our house looks like a tornado went through it.

So I am sure you are way more prepared than I and I am not worried one bit, things will work out just fine.

  • I had my baby shower at 31 weeks and that following day (MLK day) we bought everything else we needed, washed all clothes, put together everything, and had it all ready to go.  At the time I thought I was crazy with how much I was obsessed with getting everything done ASAP.  But it was great because that Thursday I was put on bed rest.   I am always a huge planner and try to do what I can when i can.  Never hurts.
  • OUr nursery is done, but has been for over two years.  We have diapers, but if your hospital is like mine, they send you home with some (not a lot, but some) so not a huge deal.

PJ's nursing tanks and suck, not a big deal, they actually recommend waiting until you know how big you will be to buy nursing bras anyway.  I just used my regular PJ's.  And really, I spent a lot of time topless with DS in the first weeks, it was just easier.

You might want to pick up a couple of basics, like a pack of onsies and a sleeper or two, but the rest I would say can wait until your shower.

The important thing is the car seat.  As long as you have that, someone can alwasy got out and get the other stuff if you need it earlier.

  • I have a pack of huggies in newborn.

My crib is in the mail (it should be here on monday).

I have two outfits (that my brother bought last weekend, or I wouldn't have those), a pack of footed pajamas and a bath time gift set, and a few fleece blankets.

    We have the carseat/stroller.

We don't have anything else. . . including the mattress, and sheets. Where my parents are from they have this tradition of waiting until after the baby comes and then going out and buying all the stuff for the baby.  I told them this was impractical for big items, but this is their first grandbaby, so I'm going to let them feel like they still have something to do after the baby comes.  I've made a list complete with colored photos of the stuff I want (nursery items) where to buy them and how much they cost. Other stuff like clothes, and things that don't really matter (the bathtub), I've listed for them but will let them make their own choice in design/color.

  • Our shower is tomorrow!! So next week I am going to nest like crazy and get everything washed, set up, and ready to go.  The past few weeks I've been at a little bit of a stand still, b/c I don't want to go out and buy things that we may get at our shower. So I've been cooking freezer meals, got the carseat inspected this AM, packed my hospital bag, and the nursery furniture is set up. I still have a lot to do, but hopefully I'll get it all done next week and then we'll be ready for this baby!

Don't freak out too much, you probably have plenty of time and like the others have mentioned just focus on the things that you REALLY need. You'll get everything done ... one step at a time :-)
