Finalizing maternity leave?

I was just reading on the American Pregnany Association that at about week 23 you are supposed to be finalizing maternity leave with your employer/hr department.

Have people done this? My boss is still in denial and won't talk about it. I have put in my request and had once conversation with her about it, but she keeps putting me off.

Not sure how to handle if in fact we are supposed to be finalizing those details?!?! Advice?!

Re: Finalizing maternity leave?

  • I know my work is pretty lenient...especially since I'm in the HR dept. and we are down staff right now so I'm working 50-60 hours a week to cover.  You should generally have your details finalized before your 7th month...that's what we usually say in HR.  If you don't feel comfortable confronting your super/mgr, just email him/her and say you'd like to schedule time to meet with them to finalize the details within the next X # of weeks.  Give them a deadline to schedule the time.  That will ensure they can prepare and talk to HR.

  • I read the same thing so i immediately went to talk to my HR dept. about it and the girl looked at me like i was crazy and told me to come back in May and she'd give me a form to be filled out by my doctor (i'm due june 1). I wouldn't worry too much about it yet! I would make sure you at least know your company's policy so you know what you are planning to do. I don't think you need to finalize any details with anyone so soon, though.

  • We don't have a specified maternity leave, so I will be using 12 weeks of FMLA and using STD and PTO to pay for it.  My employer said that we don't need to start filling anything out till around the 36 week mark.  The only reason I told early was so that there was coverage for me while I was gone.  Other than that there was no reason to do anything early.

  • My company has this huge process and I have to do 10 different things, but they want me to wait until about 8-10 weeks before to start it. It's all very confusing.  We were purchased last summer, so I am the 1st to go through it with the new company, so no one can really even give me advice based on past experience. So frustrating! I'd be happy to have it done and planned already.

  • I work for a large company and they don't want me to open up my maternity leave any more than 60 days in advance.
  • I contacted HR around the 8 week mark to make sure I understood the policy. I don't have to do anything until around 30 weeks or so (we are permitted to go on disability  at 36 weeks if the doctor will sign off on it).  Fortunately, a couple of my friends at work have been through maternity leave recently so they helped me understand it all.
  • Thanks....We are a small non-profit and I am the first to ever go on maternity leave or inquire about it. Also, we don't qualify for FMLA because of our staffing numbers. So basically my boss is creating the plan around me...which is a little odd in my mind.

I will approach her again and ask if we can talk about it in the next couple of weeks. She keeps saying the Board of Trustees has to be involved somehow. Just a little shady.

  • My HR person and I are actually going to discuss this today.  Included in the discussion will be my options with FLMA and pay, as well as tubal litigation.
  • I could understand why the Trustees have to be involved when establishing a new policy.  They are the governing board.  They don't want person by person policy because then you can get into issues of discrimination and unfair treatment.
  • I definitely understand about creating the policy...but knowing that they are attorneys, corporate CEO's etc., you would think that it would be an easier process.

Who knows! I did just put in my calendar to touch base with my ED next month and see where we stand.
