I've never had much of a freezer supply so if I did have any in there it would get used up pretty quickly. ?Well I pulled some out last night from 12/23 and it didn't smell right so I tossed it. ?Again tonight I thawed some and it didn't smell right either, I only have about 15 bags in the freezer but with my supply issues that was good and I hate to lose it. ?Any ideas?
Re: Feel like a newbie, frozen BM questions
frozen BM can smell a little off sometimes.
try offering it to your baby. if baby objects- you have what have a lipase issue.
Lipase, the enzyme that digests fats, stays active when milk is frozen. Some mothers have a high level of this enzyme and their milk smells and tastes soapy when thawed. The milk is not harmful but the baby may refuse it. You can scald your milk before storing it to make the lipase inactive by heating the milk to about 180 degrees F (82 degrees C), or until small bubbles form around the edge of the pan. Chill quickly and store.
definitely try to see if she will take it. most likely she will.
Most babies do not mind a mild change in taste, and the milk is not harmful, but the stronger the taste the more likely that baby will reject it.
there is really no known way to 'save' what you already have frozen to counteract the excess lipase issue.
hopefully she takes it just fine for you. GL
I would offer it. My DD is really picky about milk and she lets us know if it doesn't meet her standards.
We had MAJOR problems and issues w/ milk storage. In the beginning I built up a huge supply that we had to dump b/c we were storing it in the door of the fridge. I was able to build up a stash again, but then we had to dump it all again b/c of another storage issue.
If your frozen milk is bad, sadly, there is nothing that can be done.
But I would offer it to DD just in case.
Also, be sure you use it right away after thawing it. That seemed to help us.
