Working Moms

mommy n me/Gymboree classes, etc.....

I have almost 7 month old twin girls.  I work full time 9-6 M-F.  I would like to be able to take them to a class soon.  I am assuming the only time is weekends. I have found a local Gymboree with classes on Saturdays.  There are other centers/mommy n me classes near me but they all meet during the week.  It kind of sucks.  If any of you take your DC's to a class or are planning on doing so, is this how you work it out?  I have no problem on Saturdays but it just kind of sucks that the types of classes are super limited b/c of my one day availability.   Ok, there's my working mom vent of the day!  :-P

Re: mommy n me/Gymboree classes, etc.....

  • Do you have your girls at home or in a daycare? I think one of the great benefits of DC is that they do that kind of stuff every day.

Do you live near any museums, zoos, parks, etc? Great places to take your girls.

Especially for littler kids - I find those gymboree places overrated.

  • We've done classes on Sats. and in the evening - I found a couple 6:45/7:00 classes.  The benefit to these classes is that i have met other working moms in my area so that's nice.  We've done Music Together, Swimming and are now doing Toddlers in Motion.  We do one class at a time.

  • Alisa--we have a live-in nanny.  Daycare for 2 infants in my area is prohibitively $$.  Great idea about museums--we have a bunch not too far...

Molldoll--thanks--I would love to meet more working moms. All the ones in my neighborhood are all SAHM.

  • i didn't find anything special when we attended the Gymboree class, I felt like it was a softer playground so no value add. not sure how feasible this is but DH takes DS to swim classes on wednesday, that's the only week day I get to work out.

  • The best thing about going to musems and parks is that it is great for parents, too! Lots to look at for babies and mommy and/or daddy get to enjoy the sights.

  • My son takes a bunch of classes- two music, one gym and a sign language class each week. ?We have a live-out nanny. ?I work three days/week. ?Our nanny takes him to his sign and gym classes and I take him to the music classes on the days I don't work. ?

I think the classes are great for him-- it gets him out of the house and we have met alot of kids/moms there who we now do playdates with. ?He seems to enjoy the classes and we get alot of great ideas there on ways to interact with him that we utilize at home. ?Because he is not in daycare, I wanted to make sure that he was socialized, as much as you can be at his young age. ?Two of the places where we take classes offer "open play" so my nanny or I take him there just to get out of the house, when it's raining or cold and we can't go outside, etc. ?Where I live, Gymborees offer open play for babies over 6 months. ?I've taken some sample classes at Gymboree and enjoyed them. ?

  • We've done My Gym classes with DS, plus gymnastics and swim lessons.  I usually sign up for Saturday classes, but I have done a couple of weeknight evening classes with him.  The evening classes were tougher when he was younger because he went to bed earlier.  Now that he stays up later it is a little easier, but it's definitely easier to do the weekend classes.

I would try one and see how you and your girls like it.  I met some other working moms which was nice, and my DS really enjoyed some of the classes.

  • I took my daughter to a Gymboree class to try it out.  She was 13 months at the time.  I thought it was annoying, very structured.  Just when DD got into playing with something it was time to move on to the next thing, about every 2 minutes!  Anyway, I think she gets most of the benefits of these classes from school normally.
  • We haven't done Gymboree yet but I've heard rave reviews. We do the same thing and use Saturday mornings for class time/activities. I think I'm just used to this time anyway, having grown up w/ classes, sports, etc. being on Sat. mornings. So far we've done swimming classes and Kindermusik- have loved both. I'm excited to start swimming again in a few weeks.

It does get aggravating every once in a while when my SAHM friends recommend classes that are smack in the middle of the work day, but I've found the same classes available on the weekends. As long as I'm on top of things and register early, we get our first choices. GL to you! I'm sure yo'd really enjoy the classes w/ your girls.

  • DD loves gymboree. She's been going since she was 16-18 months or so. I'm not sure that a younger kid would get as much out of it but it would be a nice place to meet other moms and the kids would still enjoy it. we did swim lessons when DD was in the neighborhood of 7 months old (maybe more like 9 months?) which she LOVED.

i think yearly passes for museums, zoos, etc are great and let you do it more on your schedule.

to keep in mind about classes, you may have to take your girls one at a time. that's fairly obvious with swim lessons, but i know some gymboree-ish places require one parent per child ratios.

  • We have our 22 month old in two classes a week - Friday night we have private swim lessons and then on Saturday mornings, we go to My Gym - which he absolutely LOVES. We pull into the parking lot and as soon as he recognizes where we are, he yells "Yayyy! Playy!" It's adorable.

I was not a fan of Gymboree and he was not either (we went for two visits). It's mostly free play and he gets to run around and play with tons of great toys. They change the layout of the room weekly and feature four different, new, activities that the kids can choose to check out (or not) each week as well. It's been such a fantastic experience for us that I cannot speak highly enough about it. Plus, the dads all go too so it's a nice family activity for us to start our weekends.

I agree - finding stuff that works with a working mom schedule sucks!
