3rd Trimester

Is this BS or is there truth to it?

I was told today that since I'm carrying a boy its extra important to carry him until at least 37 weeks due to lung development. Something about boy's lungs develop slower than girl's? Is this true? I tried google but I'm not coming up with anything substantial.

  • I've heard that from someone as well but I dont have any concrete proof.

  • I've heard this too! But I'm sorry I don't have any idea if it's true...

  • Yeah I've also heard that boys' lungs develope slower than girls but I have no proof of that. Just something I read and I don't remember where.

  • it is true. girls develop faster all together and so their lungs are ready sooner. they say if you are going to have a baby premature its better that its a girl because they have a better chance of nothing going wrong.

  • I worked in L & D for a year and 1/2 and OB/GYN clinic for a little over a year and I can't say I've ever heard that.  I'm no expert by all means, but there are so many things out there to scare us.

  • Wow!!  I just heard this today as well!! Weird.  But it was in the context of a coworker explaining that her sister just had her little boy six weeks early, and he's breathing fine on his own, with no respirator.  So, one data point to the contrary.

  • I've heard boys are more susceptible to lots of things when babies.  Higher risk of SIDS and birth defects among others.

  • that's what my dr. told me.
  • I've heard this, too, and just googled it and didn't find a whole lot.  There were a few articles about how boys in multiple births tend to have more defects than girls due to their slower rate of maturity, so I guess there might be some truth to it.
  • I'm a neonatologist, and there is actually truth to this.  If you look at outcomes data, girls almost always do better than boys do - especially if they are premies.  This is also true in late preterm infants (which would include 36 weekers.)  Obviously, not all boys born at 36 weeks have problems with their lungs.  But if you look at the studies, there are a lot less problems after 37 weeks.
  • They actually told us this in my childbirth class.

  • Yes, it's true.  There's an order to how well each sex and race does if born before 40 wks.  They call it "Wimpy White Boy" syndrome since white males do the worst when born before 39 wks.  My OB won't induce white males before 39 wks. for this reason.
