3rd Trimester

Question for GD mamas

I have to take the 3-hour test next week, and my doctor told me to eat a high-carb diet for 2 or 3 days before the test.  I'll do what my doctor says, but I'm curious if anyone else was told the same thing.  Personally, I don't want to get an artificially high result because I've been downing the cookies and cake for three days, and honestly in case I do have GD, I'd really rather just begin the GD diet now as opposed to a week from now when I get the test done.

Any thoughts?

Re: Question for GD mamas

  • the only instruction i was given was to have half a sandwich and a glass of milk the night before (around 10:30 as I was going in as soon as the lab opened in the morning) so that I hadn't fasted for too long before the test.  After that only water until the test is over.

You've been eating cookies & cakes b/c they told you to eat a high carb diet?  that sounds more like a high sugar diet.  & not a good idea.

  • when i took my three hour my doctor only told me no food or drink after midnight.??

  • I was told only to fast after midnight the night before. I have heard others say that they were told to eat a high carb diet the days beforehand and I specifically asked my doctor and they said no. Whatever your doctor says I would do though.  Plus if you have GD it will be your last time to really let loose.
  • I was given a diet to follow the day before and was only to eat around 150 carbs for the day then had to fast starting at midnight before the test.
  • I was also told to eat a high carb diet for 2 to 3 days beforehand. I did, and I failed the test, but think I would have failed no matter what.
  • I was told to follow a high carb diet (my doctor gave me a very specific diet to follow with amounts and types of carbs to eat) for 3 days before the test.  Then nothing to eat or drink after midnight.  And I passed the test with flying colors.  A big percentage of pregnant women have abnormal 1 hour tests and have completely normal 3 hour tests so unless you've had GD with a past pregnancy you will most likely be just fine.  Good luck with the test, it's miserable but worth it when they tell you its normal.
