WDYT? Baby bedroom (long)

Background info: DH and I live in a almost  1800 sq ft 3 bedroom house. We also have a den/formal dining room with bay windows.

We are trying to decide whether to turn our 3rd bedroom into the baby's room -or-  turn our formal dining room into the baby's room. They have similar dimensions (the dining room is 13 x 15 and the 3rd bedroom is 11 x 11).

We use the office as an office/"craft" (scrapbooking, sewing, etc) room, but we aren't in there a lot as of late. The dining room does have a table for four but we really don't use it all that often.

We do have a breakfast knook area in our kitchen that we use for a sitting area (mostly for looks) that we could put the dining room table in. We also have a large counter that we could easily put 6+ stools at (we have 2 now).

WDYT? Should we rearrange our eating areas and put a french door on the dining room? (So that we could use it as a dining room one day if we needed to?)  Or should we lose the office and make that baby's room?

TIA

  • I'd use the bedroom not the dining room.

  • If you don't want a formal dining room, I think I would rather move the office into the dining room.  That way baby can have a closet.  (I assume your dining room doesn't have a closet)
  • I say ditch the office and convert that to a nursery.  You can always change the rooms around later to switch out dining room for office space, if needed, or office stuff can be done in the den, but I don't think the baby would want french doors on their room as they age and I don't think adding a bedroom in this case would add much resale value to your house. (though it could, so someday making that an office/4th bedroom out of the dining room could be okay)...but for now, I say it's easier to wait on that.
  • I would turn the office into the bedroom.  I have a dining room with no furniture but that room will probably serve as the early play room.  When the baby gets older, the loft that we have on our second floor will be the play room.

What about noise from the rest of the house affecting the dining room/baby's room?  My house is so open that it would never work!

  • I think it would depend on the flow of the house, but I agree that a bedroom option will probably be better.  You would have closet space in the bedroom, unless you plan on building a closet into the dining room, which mich be really awkward if you convert it back to a dining room later.  I know I need all the closet space I can get!
  • I'd definitely use the bedroom. You can convert the dinning room into the office. You're going to want the child to have an enclosed room of their own. It may seem far off now, but they'll be a toddler very quickly and they deserve their own space. I knew someone who set up their third child in a similar room. They lived there for 10 years, and it never felt like a bedroom. The child pleaded to take their siblings room the second they left for college.

  • I'd use the bedroom too, you can always move the office into the dining room if you don't wanna loose that...and then the dining table to the other room (I already forgot what it was but it sounded as good idea!) GL!
  • Why not use the den as the office and use the bedroom as the nursery and leave the dining room as, well, a dining room.  Seems like a simple decision to me.  Am I missing something???
  • I would convert the dining room to the office and make the current office/3rd bedroom the nursery....!

It's a den/formal dining room off the dining room. It's off to the front side of the house so it's apart from everything else.

  • I would definitely use the bedroom!
  • I'd use the bedroom for the baby's room (especially since it probably has a closet)  and then move the office to the dining room with french doors added.  Although I probably wouldn't give up a formal dining room in the first place!

  • For resale/stagging purposes you will not want to lose a dining room, if you already have a 3rd bedroom being used as an office I would just convert that room.?
  • If your home has two stories, you should really think about the running up and down that would take place during the night if you use the dinning room.  That could get tiring.

I think the bedroom is the best bet, especially if the child will be living in that room for a while.  Imagine trying to keep them in bed if you are up watching tv in the living room.
