So far the only name DH and I both kind of like is William. Problem is the only nn we like is Will, and we don't like Billy, Bill and def not Willy. What do you think the odds are of us successfully getting people to call the baby Will and avoiding the other nn's?
Re: Thoughts on the name William?
That's what we are naming our baby if it's a boy. But we're going to use the nickname Liam.
I think if you tell people that you call him Will, then they will, too. If anyone uses Willy, just correct them.
I like Will a lot.
It's our boy middle name - and I'm with you. Thomas is the first name and we don't want Tommy or Tom - it's Thomas. The plan is to teach kiddo his name - if he knows his name isn't Tommy, then people won't call him that. My name is Mary Elizabeth and I don't go by Mary - it's M.E. or the full thing. And I knew that at a very young age. Nobody has ever called me Mary - it's simply not my name.
I think your odds are good. My way of answering is just long.
if you want him to be called Will then just say "no its Will" when someone says willy or billy. then he will be used to that and when he gets a little older and someone tries to call him anything else he will correct them himself. at least my little brother did.
i like the name william its one of the few boy neames dh and i can agree on as well. he is stuck on Luke though, im almost ready to cave
I think as long as you are firm and consistent EVERYTIME whoever says OOOH lil willy kootchie... you'll be fine. I remember a "willam" from teaching and he was teeeeeny and at first it sounded like a big name for a little guy, but it really grew on me. Will is fine!
DH and are naming our DS John, and I will give one warning then throat punch whoever calls him "Johnny."
I love William. It's my top boy name right now, although DH doesn't think it's "unique" enough (you'd think he was a 14 year old girl with the taste he has in names).
I think that nicknames you hate happen most often when you want the child refered to only as his full name, not any nickname at all. Like if you say his name is Michael, people will inevitably shorten it to Mike. But, I think if you choose a nickname and go with it, I don't think you'll have problem. I've known several Wills, and no one ever thought to call them Bill. If you introduce him as Will, then I think people will call him that and not randomly decide to start calling him Bill.
my father's name is william and he goes by his middle name ~ my grandmother decided to do that because she didn't want this same exact problem- she didnt want ppl calling him Billy or Willy (she hated that)~
everyone that knows my dad, knows him by his middle name (he just introduces himself like that)~ and ppl that call him Will or Bill don't know him at all usually (but at that point, you wouldn't be calling someone by their "nickname," so calling him Will or Bill is very rare).... ppl tend to go by the full name until it is noted what their nickname is! so i don't think it would be a problem.

This reminds me of my MIL. DH's name is Patrick, which I love, but I do not call him Pat. Other people sometimes do but I prefer the full name. MIL constantly brings up how she used to call him "Trixie" which I (and he) find horrifying. Another reason I want to punch her. Not only was he super chubby as a kid, but then she slaps him with Trixie? Was she trying to get him killed at school? I know she's going to end up calling my kid something dumb too.
