Daycare?

Hey ladies - long time no see for many of you. I used to post on theKnot and theNest a few years back, married in 2004, now i'm on theBump, go figure! haha.

Anyway, I'm just 7 weeks in, but I'm curious about daycares. I live in the Heights and work downtown (hubby works in the med center).

Any recommendations? Also, how did you go about finding a day care?

Re: Daycare?

  • congrats!

we opted to find a daycare closer to our home. while we both only work about 20 minutes from home, our jobs are 45 minutes away from eachother. when i first went back to work, dd was in an inhome daycare 5 minutes from my job. when dh had to do the pickup/dropoff the commute took forever.

we went into several daycares and let them sell themselves to us. we started noticing the things we preferred right away (the small class ratio, facilities, price, hours, policies, etc). After going to the 2nd facility we knew exactly what questions to ask, and the list grew with each interview.

    good luck in your search!

  • My biggest rec right now is to get on a waiting list as soon as you can.  You'd be surprised at how long they are.

  • Hey, stranger! Welcome back :)

You might remember I also live in the Heights. I don't know if you know this, but we have a HUGE moms group in the neighborhood and it's a great resource- over 500 families and tons of good advice and recs for everything from daycare to cleaning ladies. We have a monthly dinner for expectant moms, as well. You should join us :)

My son goes to MDO at Esperanza. I know many people whose kids also go there for full time daycare. While there is a waiting list, you don't need to worry about it quite yet, but you should tour and get your ducks in a row. Gonzales is another daycare that quite a few local kids go to (on Rutland). i have friends with kids at St Marks and 3Rs Montessori, as well, but I think they don;t take kids intul a year... Really, the moms' group will have the best information for you locally since there is really no comprehensive resource out there to help you find something.

email me if you want details on the expectant moms group

  • Ditto Harmony's suggestion. Get on waitlists NOW!

The best one I've heard about in the Heights is Esperanza. You'd have to page a Heights lady like Vuila or Pook on the main board for location etc.

My son went to Creme de la Creme downtown when I first went back to work. Then a place opened up near our neighborhood, so we switched him. I wanted him to be at a school with other kids that lived in his area for playgroups and things.

My son now goes to St Andrews in West U, which I can't rave enough about....but you'll probably want your child at a school near your home for the "playgroups" reason.

  • congrats! I remember you from the old knot days.

We've been happy with Creme downtown. Cathedral House and Trinity Lutheran might be worth considering. We looked at all three.

    Get on the lists. :)

  • I'm new to the nest, and was really excited to see this post. I'm also in the Heights  and new to the area. We are on the Esperanza waiting list. We've heard great things about it. I would be interested in the Height's networking group if anyone has more information.
  • sounds like you got the help you need -- just wanted to say Long Time for sure but good to see you back!
