you know - I felt that way before and would not be happy if DH hunted. But you can't deny that hunting is way more humane than factory farming. So if you're OK with people eating meat then how can you object to people hunting for food?
(genuine question).

Eh...I don't get why its fun for some people, but I grew up in an area of hunters so it really doesn't bother me. Its pretty much the same thing as eating any other type of meat. Those animals die too. JMO.

That's a great point Zenya.
I think there are quite a few people out there hunting out of necessity. I can't imagine begrudging anyone the right to feed their family if that's the means they have of doing so.
Hutning of some species does serve a purpose (i.e. keeping population numbers down) but I don't get hunting like grizzly bears, going on safaris and killing endangered animals, etc.
I don't really get what makes hunting "fun," though, in any case.

It upsets me if it is just done for sport, but if you are actually eating/using the meat from the animal, I don't see any difference with that, then buying it at the store.
I agree. While I bet there are people out there that use it as a means to feed their family, I would assume most do it for sport which I think is absolutely disgusting. Why is it such fun to shoot a deer, watch it bleed to death, & then hang its carcass on your wall??
Completely agree. I grew up in TX and everyone hunted. Just awful. All of my brother's friends did but he would not because our family loves animals. IMO it is WT.

I think you'd be surprised at the number of people who do actually eat the meat. And those who don't eat the meat -- or can't eat the amount of meat they get -- often donate it. Homeless shelters love to receive fresh deer meat!
Hunting is actually a very controlled industry. And the money made from licensing and tagging a deer goes back to the community.

ditto this. I don't particularly like the thought of hunting and don't really get the appeal...but at least hunters are eating 'free range' food, right? The Perdue chickens have it way worse.

as for the 'trophy' -not my style in terms of decor, but I can assure you than any buck hanging on someone's wall was also many many dinners. I also don't know any sportsmen that hunt and then don't eat what they kill. (regardless of their game of choice)
Most hunters do eat their kill and here in GA hunting is neccesary to control the deer pop. B/C of the decrease in hunting the deer are actually starving to death. Not to mention the car accidents and fatalities they cause. Hunters and fishers ( at least the ones I know) are very protective of the enviroment.
I grew up eating venison, and I love it. I've never known anyone that hunted and didn't eat the meat. Killing anything for sport is wrong. But who am I to judge any hunters since I eat meat.
I felt similar until I met a hunter. I'd venture a guess that you've never actually talked to a hunter. Or understand anything about hunting permits, where that money goes (habitat preservation, btw), controlling animal populations in order to reduce, say, deadly deer on car accidents.
It's like people talking about banned books. Don't talk about something you know nothing about.

Big ol' ditto. I've never met a hunter that didn't use the meat. Kurt Russell has a celebrity hunt that people pay $15,000 to be a part of and they donate the meat to a homeless shetler. I know that PETA harrassed him to no end about it, so I don't know if he is still doing it or not. If he stopped because of the animal rights people, who wins? Certainly not the homeless shelter that would benefit from the money or the meat.
Not to mention that if the population of deer isn't controlled through hunting, then those animals will die from starvation or disease. Being killed with a bullet or arrow would be far more humane than the other two options IMO.
I won't flame you, but I will say that I think it's a bit judgy for you to say you find it vile & disgusting when I doubt seriously that you "get" why people hunt. Yeah, it's a game & a sport (which I STILL don't understand); but people hunt for meat to eat, to feed their families or people in need. I don't think that's vile or disgusting. There are organizations, like Hunters Feeding the Hungry, to help hunters who either have too much meat or who just want to donate. It really irks me when people find it "vile & disgusting" and act like hunters are just out there killing animals and leaving them, when that is not the case at all. The deer here can easily over populate and would starve to death, would you find that less vile or disgusting?
I can understand that to a point...but I think abortion is much more vile & disgusting & lots of people who think hunting is evil are OK w/ it so I guess I generally don't get most people's selective moral outrage.

Have you ever struck a deer with your car? Living in Michigan, and visiting northern Michigan, you get an appreciation for hunting deer. I was always against it, until I started driving. They are everywhere, have caused the death of a few people I know and are over populated. Hunting season here (for guns) is only 2 weeks. IMO, the more that they are hunted, the less chance of one darting out in front of my car and possibly killing me or my family.

I have never personally hit a deer (both my dad and brother have) but there are quite a few here, at my parents place, my brother's place etc.
As far as the "selective moral outrage" that's odd. So people cannot have things that personally bother them without being "outraged" by everything? Okey dokey.

Ditto. DH & FIL hunt and I won't eat the meat because I just don't like the taste, but they always do. It would be vile and disgusting to hunt and just leave the animal carcass or not eat the meat or donate it.
I am very gald that hunters are not just hunting for the joy of killing and that they have a plan to consume the dead animal. And yes donating anything you might otherwise dispose of would seem very giving.
I assumed that based on your extreme judgment of hunters. My bad thinking you can be that judgy of someone you know so well. And comparing deer population in NorCal to Michigan = LOLz.
I was not comparing the deer population here to that of Michigans..only pointing out that they wander around these parts as well and up near my parents place. LOLzies, BRB, LMAO, TIA
I love the old farts (the hunters I've grown up around) with all my heart. I just think hunting is well....disgusting!
And FWIW I find the idea of eating meat personally disgusting but my husband and children eat it. Sooooo I guess I can think something sucksass and still love people who do it!
My dh hunts deer and has shot a bear too. It doesn'tphase me one bit because my dad and brothers hunted. Venison is a much leaner meat that is why I like it. I could see why it might disturb people tho, I could feel bad if I really thought about it but the deer are crazy where I live in MI so I am happy my dad and dh shoot them because I am afraid of hitting one in my car. We always eat the meat-it saves us a lot of money.
Re Zenya's question - yes we all accept that animals are killed for food and unless we're vego (and I'm not) we deal with that. Yes they should be killed humanely when at all possible.
But I think part of "humanely" is not ENJOYING their death. It isn't the fact that they're killed that bothers me. Our ancestors killed for food necessarily too. It is that hunters don't need to do it, they could go and buy it from the supermarket, but they ENJOY KILLING A LIVING CREATURE.
It is the fact they enjoy it that makes it sick. And the hunters are sickos.
I have an uncle on a farm who has occasionally had to kill vermin (sometimes even kangaroos which are officially culled). He does it because he has to but in no way enjoys it. He comes in after a day hunting overpopulated kangaroos and he feels sick at the thought. I think if hunters felt a trace of that every time they shot something a) I wouldn't mind so much b) they wouldn't be lining up to join the "sport".?
So by all means cull overpopulation when needed. And of course it is better to use the meat than not. But that doesn't fix the fact these people wouldn't be hunting if they did not enjoy it. If I lived in a place where hunting was required to survive I would just move to somewhere else. They could do. They choose not to. They do that because they LIKE hunting. That is the sick part.?

That's better than thinking it's "bile" and disgusting.
Ok, that was a bad joke from a post earlier in the day.

I think hunting for pure sport is pretty sick.
If you hunt and use/eat the animal, more power to you.

yea - I don't eat meat either.
