Houston Babies

Anyone ever heard of this?

I have to admit that when I was listening to this story I thought, "Now I've heard it all."

My neighbor told me that her good friend recently had to take her new baby to the ER a few days ago.  Why?  Because one of her (the mom's) HAIRS had gotten wrapped tightly around one of her baby's TOES.  She was told that if she hadn't gone for treatment as quickly as she did, the baby might have needed to have the toe amputated.  Evidently this isn't an uncommon problem!

Anyone else ever hear of this?  My neighbor said there's even a website devoted to this issue, although I haven't googled it myself.

Re: Anyone ever heard of this?

  • yep.  heard of it.

A lady I worked with in Houston told me to always watch Joe's socks for stray hairs... cause if one gets wrapped around his toe it can actually cut off blood flow and it would either need to be amputated or it would do it for us.  :(

so... yeah...  I've been careful since.  Tongue Tied

  • Wow, never heard of it before.....
  • I read about that in one of the parenting magazines.  Like we need more things to worry about!

  • I read it somewhere and it said to keep a bottle of Nair around just in case...so it can dissolve the hair without any harm to the kiddo.

I think we read the same magazine.

KelleyA - I would have NEVER thought of Nair.  I heart the Bump.

  • never heard of it. with everything else i have to worry about, i think that will be a pretty low priority, but it's always good to know.

  • Some of my baby books said if there's unexplained crying/shrieking to look for hairs like that.  I've found a few on M, but they haven't bothered her and I've been able to get them off myself.
  • I was warned by an older family member to watch for them in his diaper....  I didn't really give it much thought, but I am sure it is possible.

*shudder* It never occurred to me that could happen on other more important parts of the body, probably because I have two girls.  I agree with the poster who said on top of everything else we have to worry about, there's this!  ACK!

  • Yes, my pedi cautioned me about this. He said if the baby was ever crying for no apparent reason, to check for this.

    Bizarre, huh?
