What is the difference?

I keep putting off buying anything wool because the whole thing just confuses me.

Is a "soaker" the lame thing as wool (aka longies and shorties)??? Then is there any difference between a wham made one vs. say an Aristocrate or LoveyBuns??? And every time I see a post about washing wool, it sounds like they messed up. I'm so freaked out that I'm going to pay $30 for a wool cover and I'll wash it wrong and ruin it. Anyone got some idiot proof directions?

Thanks!

Re: What is the difference?

  • Start here and here.  That'll give you a quick overview.

A soaker is just a diaper cover.  It can be worn alone or under loose fitting clothes.  Shorties are wool shorts, generally warn as diaper cover and shorts.  Longies are long wool pants, worn as diaper cover and pants.

Does this help any?  I'll be happy to answer questions if you have more.

  • Awww, don't be afraid of wool! Wool RULES.

A wool soaker is a pull-on diaper cover. Its the same as any cover, but it doesn't have snaps or velcro, it just pulls on like underwear over the diaper.

A pair of wool longies is just like, wool pants. Just a long-legged diaper cover. They're ADORABLE and really nice and breathable. I love love love longies!

I would say that there is no difference, in general. You'd just have to look at the individual quality. But there are some AMAZING WAHMS out there that are like, knitting goddesses! Not that all wool is knit. Some is interlock, which is my personal fave.

As far as washing, its SO easy. I just wash my wool in the bathroom sink. Use lukewarm water. too hot or too cold will shock the fibers. But, you don't have to be all scientific about it. Just like, medium warm. I put it in the sink with the water and scrub with a wool-wash bar. But you can also use wool wash. I think a lot of mamas like something called Ewe Need It. The thing about wool wash is that it has lanolin in it. You need the lanolin to keep the fibers water-repellent. Or, I guess pee repellent in this case.

I also use a spray lanolin. I can't remember which kind right now, its one that Glad recommended. I LOVE it. I allow the wool to dry. Oh, yeah, to dry, I just put it in between two towels to get most of the water out. I let it sit that way for awhile, and then I just hang it the rest of the way dry. Then, once its mostly dry (still a little damp) I spray the lanolin on. Mostly just in the crotch area. And the bootie.

Thta is all. It sounds complicated, but really, my wool washing routine only takes a few minutes and I only do it every few weeks.

  • I'll have to read your blog tonight when I get home. I can't access them from work. =(

When you say loose fitting clothing......does that mean that DS couldn't wear his knit pajamas over the soaker at night? He usually wears those to bed and I'm trying to find an option that will help him "breath" a little better down there. He wets so much at night that the wetness in his diaper (with two foofoo hemp liners) gives him a little start of a rash.

  • A soaker is a wool cover - closer to shorties.  As for the difference between WAHM and comercially made, you can definitely see the difference - WAHM soakers look homemade (super cute) and usually have a larger knit (unless it's interlock), but that is based on limited observational data only.  As for performance, I'd guess it depends on the WAHM.  Washing wool is pretty easy - just don't let your DH put it in the washing machine!!  I just asked for advice here before I started - haven't had any problems yet.  I just wash with some baby wash and a 1/4 inch of lanolin that has been disolved in water (I microwave it in a cup of water to get it to fully dissolve), just make sure your water isn't too hot.  YOu can also buy wool wash (which I'm going to try soon!).  HTH>

  • We use our Aristocrats at night under DS's jammies (just regular sleepers), and haven't had any problem.

he'd be fine at night I'm sure.  I just say loose fitting clothes because people try to put a woolie on under a onesie that is nearing too short in the rise and the pressure of the onesie can cause compression wicking.  I'll say though that I had T in woolies and all the onesies that we got as gifts when he was little and we never had a problem.  wool really is great.  we are a 100% wool cover household.

  • Awesome! So of course this leads to more questions....

One post said to mix 1/4" of lanolin with water in microwave. The only time I've heard of lanolin is with the nipple cream stuff when I was breastfeeding. I'm assuming that isn't the same thing. =) So when you say 1/4", does that mean you buy a stick of it somewhere?

Second question, I hear interlock and knitted. Okay, know what knitted is, but what is interlock then? (The only one I've seen in person has been an Aristocrate from a far). I'm assuming that is interlock since it didn't look knitted?

  • Oh, and one of you mentioned, some WAHM made soakers are amazing.....SO, which ones are the best. I can read of diaperpin what the best kind of "brand name" ones are, but what do you like best.

I think soakers will work best for me son, but a few shorties might be cute for my little girl when she's born and not too hot.
