I need a new carrier... I've been using the cheapo version of the bjorn since Fiona was born, but it's killing my back, and she doesn't fit in it so well anymore... but I don't have much spare money to buy something new...
I was going to try to make my own moby, but before I do, I wondered...
Fiona's about 17 pounds. Are they comfortable for heavier babies, or only for newborns??
And what kind of fabric should I buy? ?
Thanks for the help, O Wise Ones!?
Re: (making my own) Moby Question
While I personally don't have any experience using a moby wrap with a bigger baby (I just recently made mine), this question came up at our LeLeche League meeting this week.
One girl has a 1 yr old, around 20 lbs, and she said she still could put him in a Moby, but that it was getting difficult. (She has a "real" one, so not sure if that makes much of a difference.)
real moby's are really stretchy - think t-shirt material so they're harder to use with really big kids. If you make your own wrap then you can easily use it with a bigger kid. My son is 16 months and pushing 30 pounds and I still use it for hip carries and back carries all the time. I have a Bali Stretch wrap which is moby like but with less stretch and a homemade one that's open weave with almost no stretch (see my siggy).
Here's a great link on how to make one and the type of fabric to look for. Basically you want something strong and I find if it has at least a little stretch that it's a little easier to use but I still have no problem with my non stretchy one. I cut my fabric into two wraps not three like the directions say - three makes it pretty narrow in my opinion.
