I don't think that matters so much as long as your doctor is experienced and knowledgeable about treating this issue and doesn't just dispense meds willy nilly.
sometimes you can't get in to a psychiatrist for a long time. seems smart to me to start with the doctor you can get into right away and go from there.

i think most DO dispense willly nilly, nor do they follow up as closely as a psych does. Also, they arent specialists up on the complete latest info with meds. if i had a heart problem i would go to a cardiologist. it's the same thing!
I am so thankful that I went to my regular doctor. Through all of this, they have found that I have two huge nodules on my thyroid that I just had to get a biopsy for to make sure I don't have thyroid cancer. I don't think a shrink could have helped me with that!

I do have to agree with this point. I am all about seeing specialists. ?I am so happy we went to see a pediatric pulmonologist for DS instead of messing around with the pedi when it comes to lung related things.
?However, it is tricky to get into a specialist, so have your OB refer you. ?That will get you an appt much quicker.?
your OB will refer you to a good psych so I think you should see them first rather then opening up the phone book and just plopping your finger on the page and hope you end up with someone good.

I think it's good to see them first, but I also agree that therapy is ESSENTIAL. I am sick and tired of docs getting drug happy, when that doesn't actually treat the problem. Talk therapy is key with any type of depression.
While I agree that you need to see a specialist, I also agree that it can take a really long time to get in to see a good shrink. My OB specifically told me to call him if I felt I had any issues regarding PPD. They have a practice that they refer their patients to and they said that if I sometimes they can get appointments quicker than if you call yourself.

I agree. I have had way too many family doctors just ask how I felt and say, we'll put you on this for awhile. Basically, you cried a few times last week? Here's some Prozac.

Like anything else, it really depends on the individual. I've been seeing my doctor now for 2 months on an ongoing basis for this issue and she just now prescribed a medication for ppd/insomnia. She started by giving me the lowest dose possible and wants me to come back to see her in 2 weeks. She is informed, experienced, empathetic, and cautious on this issue. She also gave me a referral for a counselor who specializes in ppd, although I don't feel the need to use this.
Do you have PPD? You seem to bring it up a lot in a way that can be confusing/discouraging for others.
mod, really. ?you usually say what's on my mind and i don't take you too seriously. ?but sometimes you go overboard. ?in this instance, your ob / pcp is a place to start in order to get a recommendation for a psychiatrist.?not all of us have a name handy.
Hmmm considering it's POST PARTUM DEPRESSION I'd say seeing your OB makes sense. AND what would you know.....DO you have PPD? I did, I saw my OB and he was very helpful and in turn part of my treatment was to see a counsler.
How about you worry about yourself instead of tell everyone what to do all the time?
you obviously are not part of the medical field. You can't just see a specialist you have to be refered. How do you get a referral? From your PCP or OB. Whom have to evaluate you first. Getting into see a specialist can take a lot of time, so in the meantime you'd go with the treatment set up by your OB/PCP.

Most cardiologists don't just see a patient off the street. You usually need a referral from your GP/Family Practice doc. Just sayin'.
I'm a psychiatrist. If someone is completely stable on the first SSRI they ever tried, I would refer them back to their PCP. Everyone learns about SSRI's in med school.
Re: i know i have said this before re: ppd or any other
If we can't trust our ob or pcp in this regard, why should we trust what YOU say?
