homemade wipes or CDs without a serger? fabric choice?

I just got a sewing machine for Christmas, which I haven't really used yet. I was wondering about making homemade wipes and CDs, using old shirts, sheets, etc... What types of fabric do you reccomend, and more impirtantly, do I have to have a serger or can I use my machine? I have figured out how to use a zig zag stitch and am wondering if this is good enough. If so, how many layers do you make your wipes?  Is there any one CD pattern online that you have found works the best, especially for a newbie to sewing and CDs?

Re: homemade wipes or CDs without a serger? fabric choice?

  • I made wipes with ready-made washcloths, and the otherside flannel. I put both of the correct sides facing each other, did a straight stitch, turned inside out, and hand stitched the last little bit. Hope this info helps you.

  • OK, just so you know, I TOTALLY don't sew! hahaha! But, I do have flannel wipes which I really love. They're thin enough that you can manipulate them well, but not too thin. I think flannel is perfect.

I bought mine. I was going to make them, but I found them for basically a buck a piece and figured that between my time and the fabric, I couldn't beat it. But, if you already have fabric laying around, then you'd probably be just as well off to make them. These are the ones I bought:

I know that lots of moms use the KCK One pattern and its widely available, I think.

that's all I got. Like I said, I'm SO not crafty!

  • I did mine with a surger, but you could easily do it with the zig zag stitch!  My wipes are 2 layers - 1 layer of birdseye cotton (going to make some soon that are just old wife beaters) and the 2nd side cotton flannel.  They're wonderful - love the flannel.

Haven't undertaken CD making, so I can't help you there.  I know there are patterns available at www.kaylasclothkits.com and I know there are other free paterns out there.

  • I have no advice about making diapers but I have been making wipes from flannel.  Cut squares of flannel, place them right sides together, straight stitch all the way around leaving yourself about a 2 inch opening, turn it right side out flatten it out (or iron), tuck the raw edge opening under so it is even with your other edges, and stitch around again.  You can straight stitch or do any decorative stitch you like.  Just make sure you catch the raw edges.
  • I just made a couple of CDs with different materials. I traced a Kissaluv contour for the shape, added elastic to the legs and back and velcro closures. On one, I used three layers of flannel (cut up old pajamas). The other one I lined in fleece and used cotton for the inner and outer layers and used microfiber for the hidden soaker.

On the middle (inside not visible layer), I sewed three layers of terry cloth to make a soaker. This was my first time making CDs, and I made 2. They were very simple and I didn't use a serger. Just make sure when you sew around three edges that it's inside out, then flip it right side out and sew the final side.

Sorry this is confusing, but try watching a video on YouTube (search for sewing CDs) or looking at other people's descriptions. It's actually very simple and easy! I "tested" them by pouring a cup of water into them, and they both soaked it up easily without leaking (you'd still need a cover). I made newborn size diapers but you can also make one size.

This is basically exactly how I made mine, I just made my tabs slightly longer for a more secure fit.
