Anyone know about/use Ovaltine?

I've never had Ovaltine, but have heard that its good and isn't too bad for you either. DS sometimes won't drink his milk and I was wondering if it would be ok to add some to it to give him some more flavor. But, I dont want to add it if its a ton of sugar or just not good for him. Anyone know what its all about?

Re: Anyone know about/use Ovaltine?

  • It isn't terrible.  It's basically sugar, cocoa, and vitamins.  Added sugar would be the bad news, and I think the amount per Tbsp is about 4g.  The upside of that is that, since its actually sugar, it isn't HFCS.

Will your DS eat yogurt and cheese?  DD isn't real big on milk and our pedi said it was fine to balance that out with other types of added dairy.  One thing that's been working well with us for DD is to put milk, a bit of yogurt, and some fresh fruit in a blender and make her a smoothie.  She will gulp that down!

  • I personally drink it sometimes but haven't actually thought about giving it to my daughter. ?Hmm.. let me go get the package...

Well, the first ingredient is sugar. That's not good. ?Then cocoa, salt, carrageenan, mono & diglycereides & artificial color. ?

Then it lists all the vitamins and minerals. ?

Per serving it's 80 calories, 19 carbs and 140 sodium. ?Aside from that it does have tons of vitamins ?and 20% of your daily iron intake. ?And a serving is 4 Tbs. ?For myself I only use 2-3 T in a very large glass. ?

I dunno... I'm not thrilled with the sugar content but kind of feel like if your son won't drink milk at all then maybe the good outweighs the bad. ?I'd put a spoonful in his sippy and see how it goes. ?I know my SIL's ped recommended this for my nephew when he wouldn't drink milk. ?

  • Have you tried Carnation Instant Breakfast? Pedi recommended that when DS first tried whole milk and didn't do so well.
  • My DD doesn't love milk.  So I make sure she gets lots of yogurt (drinkable, too) and cheese.  I wouldn't make a habit of the Ovaltine, but a treat is okay.

PS:  My mom gave us Ovaltine, so I was a fan as a kid.  I always wanted real chocolate syrup like Quik. I think she thought it was more nutritious.

My darling daughter just turned 4 years old.
