Toddlers: 24 Months+

Had to take DS to the ER. Peanut Butter :(

I decided to give DS a tiny bit of PB today. ?I put a small amount on a Ritz cracker (didn't even cover a third of the cracker) and added another cracker to make a little sandwich. ?

DS ate about 2 bites and didn't want it anymore. ?About 1-2?minutes?later I noticed that his face/nose was red and he was rubbing it. ?Then he started rubbing his eyes. ?Then his eyes started to swell. ?This was all in about 5 minutes after the PB. ?

So we ran out of the house and jumped in the car to go to the ER. ?I called 911 on the way there and they told us it was best to pull over and they sent an ambulance to meet us. ?It seemed like it took forever?for the ambulance to get there. ?They met us and they checked his breathing which was ok and they said we were free to take him to the ER ourselves. ?

It took about 2 hrs at the ER and we left with prescription of Benedryl, Prednisone, and a Epi Pen Jr. ?

I've never been so scared in all my life! ?It just happened so fast. ?DH and I have no allergies to peanuts or foods in our families so I didn't expect a reaction. ?I asked the Pedi at his 12 and 15 month appointments about PB and she said it was fine to try.?

  • How scary!!  I'm glad your DS is ok.  I am so scared to try pb (we don't have a history of peanut allergies either).  Our pedi recommends waiting until 3 so that is what we are doing since it makes me so nervous!
  • That is so scary!  I'm glad everyone is doing better.

Epi Pen's are scary, but they aren't bad.  I carry one.

Hopefully it is something he will grow out of and eventually be able to enjoy PB!

  • Poor little man!  That sucks!

  • oh no!  i am sorry that happened mama, nothing more scary than an allergic reaction that you have no clue about or no control over.  glad his breathing was fine and you caught it so fast!
  • Same thing happened to me when dd was about 14m old w/some pecan/cashew butter. ?I called the pedi & the nurse told me to give children's liquid Benedryl, but if there was difficulty breathing to call 911. ?I, of course, didn't have any Benedryl in the house, so I had to pile both kids into the stroller (still wearing their dinner) & run 2 blocks to the store! ?SO scary! ?I'm glad your ds is OK! ??
  • Oh no! ?That is my biggest fear! ?DH has severe allergies so we have been holding off on a lot of the high-frequency allergy items for this very reason. ?Quick thinking on your part- way to go mama! ?I'm glad your little one is okay!

  • Holy crap!! Poor little man... I would be terrified too. Do they think he could grow out of it?

I just read this to H and asked if he wants to be the one to drive the girls to Hamot if they react to Pb- which he thinks is totally fine to let them have. (Hamot is 12 minutes from my house :P)

  • thats so scary! thats a reason i'm afraid of giving ds any pb! we are not allergic to it, but i'm allergic to so many other things, i'm scared of having him try it! i hope your dc is feeling better! :)
  • So sorry you had to go through this! That's scary. Poor little guy. Hopefully he'll outgrow the allergy and is feeling better.

  • I could have written this exact post 2 years ago!  DS is now 3 and we tried PB right after he turned 1.  He had the exact reaction that you described.  Neither DH nor I have peanut or food allergies either.

We also carry an Epi-pen with us where ever we go.  Peanuts are in so many things.  I read every label before DS gets anything.

I'm not sure when/if I'll be comfortable trying pb w/ DD.  It was scary to see the reaction, especially since it did happen so fast!

  • so scary!! ?Sorry you had to go through that. ?
