Holy crap! My dad lost his job!

After 22 years with this company my dad lost his job today. I cannot imagine how he is feeling! Or my mom for that matter. My mom still works but my dad was the bread winner. I just can't wrap my head around it. He is 58 years old! Seriously, do companies hire someone of that age for a decent paying job?

  • Shoot, I'm so sorry.  This economy is just horrible.

  • I'm so sorry to hear this. After 22 years of service. Wow. My Dad got a new job in his mid 50's. It was rough for him but I think he's much happier now. Wishing your Dad and your family a good turn in his job search.
  • Good lord, will it ever end????  I'm so sorry Megan.  I hope something turns up quickly.

  • Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that!  My dad lost his job in 2002 after 26 years with the same company (well, essentially the same...  it was bought and sold many times).  They eliminated his position.  He was 49.  I will say this-- he lost 75 pounds, which he needed to, he got some work done on the house, and he LOVES his current job.  I'd say he's better off, at least in terms of his happiness (not financially though.. but he did figure it all out).

And I agree, this economy is crappy.  Hopefully he's able to find something!

  • I'm so sorry to hear this. Your poor dad. What has happened to loyalty?

To give you hope, my dad was forced into retirement after 33 years with his trucking company and he found a job within a week in the same industry, at a much smaller scale. His industry is cutting jobs left and right but there just happened to be an opening when he needed it. You just never know, and I will keep your family in my thoughts. There are jobs to be had out there, it is just slim pickings.

  • I am sorry to hear that! My stepfather retired at 60 from the FBI, but still found a job and has continued to work.  I wish your dad the best!

  • I'm so sorry to hear that.  I can't imagine how much of a shock that must have been and how stressful it is for your family.
  • Oh, that is awful :(
  • I'm sorry to hear that! I hope he's able to find something soon and that it ends up being something even better than the job he lost.
  • I'm sorry to hear that Megan.  It makes me sick when I hear stories like this--people working that long at a company only to be given the boot.  I hope he finds something soon.

  • I am so sorry to hear that.  My dad just switched jobs at age 63 (it was either switch or lose the job), so it can be done.  I hope he is able to find something else!
  • My goodness, I'm so sorry!
  • My Dad lost his job last summer (right after buying a new house) when they eliminated his department.  It was definitely a scary time but he was able to find something new and get back on his feet after a few months.

Good luck to your Dad!  I hope he finds something quickly!
