Well DS is 10 months old, but he only gained a pound from 6-9 months, and our Dr. wasn't concerned. Did she drop far in the percentiles? I've read somewhere that breastfed babies often slow down in growth after 6 months compared to formula fed babies, so maybe that has something to do with it.
They did not tell me the drop in percentile b/c we were in for a sick visit. she gained 8 ounces in 5 weeks...that is very little right? She is 8 months today.
Well, how long has she been sick? DS doesn't eat much when he's sick. Could she have had a minimal weight loss due to illness, and will gain it back when she's better?
not sure how much weight they are supposed to gain...I think it slows down?? Maybe give her some yogurt, cheese, is she active? Maybe she's just a skinny baby?
I don't wanna tell you this cuz you breastfeed...but formula makes baby's fat, If thats not an option maybe give her more food?? go to stage 3 foods? finger food?
At this age they are supposed to gain anywhere from 2-4 ounces a week. So, 8 ounces is just under that. I would suggest encouraging longer BFing sessions by making the environment as calm as possible (dark, quiet, etc). Maybe even let her nurse to sleep if she doesn't already. Also, feed foods that are rich in good fats like avocado. There is more info on kellymom.com, but that's what came to mind right away.
FWIW, the difference in what she gained and what the average is is so little that I would think it was the sickness. If your doctor is not familiar with the growth of breastfed babies (it sounds like this is not the case) I might consider getting a new doc. GL!
