Re: humidifier or vaporizer? warm mist or cool mist?

  • I don't know the difference, but we use a warm mist humidifier in Max's room.  We really like it because it's quiet and there isn't a fan on it.  Our's turns off immediately when it runs out of water whereas the cool mist fan keeps running which scares me as far as a fire goes.  The warm mist also warms his room up a little bit.

I was told to sit Max is a bathroom with a hot shower running, so to me the warm mist would serve the same purpose.

    Good Luck!

  • We got a Vicks vaporizer. Not sure what the difference is between that and a humidifier, to be honest.

For congestions, I would definitely suggest warm mist.
  • We have a Vick's Vaporizer and it works great!
  • I recently talked to the pedi about this - they both serve the same purpose but the warm mist machine gets hot so you just have to be careful that Ava doesn't touch it.

I use a vaporizer (warm mist) in Brooke's  room at night when she needs one, but recently bought a cool mist one to use during the day downstairs.

  • We have two cool mist ones (Vick's), I've read that they're safer. But I had no idea that running one w/o water could be a fire hazard! I figured it was just a fan above some water so it couldn't hurt and we sometimes use Kady's w/o water just for the white noise. I guess we better start putting water in it every night now!

ditto Alisonada! We have the Vicks cool mist and we have it on every night as her white noise. I only put water in it when she is actually congested.

  • Our pedi recommended the cool mist humidifier.  Warm mist actually can breed more germs than the cool mist, hence the recommendation.  We run Justin's every night in the winter and it has helped him tremendously.  We have a Vicks model and it takes regular water, not distilled.

Our pedi recommended a cool mist one. We have a filterless version which is great since we just rinse the reusable filter once a month in vinegar. We got ours at Home Depot but they carry it at Target, too.
