Where abouts are you located. My mom plans several events a year. We've done many showers - a tea party, backwards, big hats, sports, barn yard animals, nautical...
I wasn't to into the backwards theme at first, but it was a lot of fun. When people arrive you say thank you for coming good bye, serve desert first before the main course, open gifts at the beginning. It was fun and the more your guests get into it the more fun it will be. The big hat party was fun too!
I am not a fan of games. I like to give a nice favor or I like to set an egg timer while the mommy to be is opening gifts. Whomever gift the mommy to be is opening when the timer goes off get a prize. Fast and no work for your guests. We've done the envelope game a million times, I hate the dirty diaper game - it's just really gross. I don't like putting a dot under someone's chair or plate - could be messy if they don't look before they eat and who want to get on the floor to look under their chair to win pot holders. Sorry - as you can see I'm not a fan.
Well, my due date was October 26th so we had a Halloween theme baby shower, and I absolutely LOVED it. We had it at the Vintage House in Fraser. The centerpieces were different Halloween home decor (cute ceramic pumpkins, smiley ghosts, etc.) and then we sprinkled candy around them and spread spider webs all over. The favor was a custom caramel apple that we ordered from Blake's Big Apple in Romeo, and I was sooooo impressed. They were the biggest caramel apples I've ever seen, and the caramel was homemade; people were grabbing more than one to take home. One of the games was you had to guess how many pieces of candy corn were inside a plastic baby bottle. All the raffle prizes were Halloween-related, and we wrapped them in Halloween paper. Plus, for the few kids that came, we had them dress in costumes, which was hilarious (we had a princess, a penguin, and a superhero). Oh, and the cake said, "Welcome Lil Punkin" with pumpkins in frosting and stuff. The invitation was custom-made and had a pregnant mummy and a daddy frankenstein, and a little baby ghost..it was wrapped in mummy gauze and said "You're invited to a shower for the Mummy To Be!" lol. We got a MILLION compliments for having such a fun theme and for doing something a little out of the ordinary...it all came together really cute and even people who scoffed at my plan in the beginning totally loved it in the end. (so ignore the haters and do what you like!)
Obviously this won't work unless you're due near Halloween, but the due date could be around another holiday and you could run with that. Just a thought!
A friend also attended a 'pirate theme' shower, and had a blast.
