Baby Names

What do you think of this name?

Seamus.

I'm not pregnant but this is a name on my short list (for when the time comes).  Just wanted to get a feel for what people think about it.

TIA.

Re: What do you think of this name?

  • i like it ok, my H was always suggesting it when we were picking out names.  My brother's name is James and I think Seamus=James so I didn't want to have any unneccessary name drama.

  • I love the name, but I'm not nearly Irish enough to think I could get away with naming my son Seamus without looking like an idiot (and DH and I are both a good bit Irish). It is an "ethnic" name that to me will always sound so.?

That being said, if you're Irish, knock yourself out. ?

  • I like it.  But it's one of those names that really depends on the last name.  If you have a fairly neutral Anglo name, it's fine.  If your name is super ethnic (like Russian or Italian) it won't work.
  • It's okay. I agree it needs to work with your heritage/last name. Also that many people will have difficulty pronouncing it. (See-mus instead of Shay-mus)

  • I like it but I think you need the right Irish last name to go with it.

A lot of people will mispronounce it.  My husband thought it was pronounced "See-mus" until he heard it out loud on TV last year.

  • That is one of the names my husband and I are considering for our baby!  We really like it but are worried about nicknames as well....

  • NMS, sorry
  • I like it, although it's not one I would ever use. It's one of the more recognizable Irish names, for me. I'd also be wary based on your last name. It works with my married name, but would not work with my (very ethnic) maiden name.

  • I'm with those who think it will be butchered by most Americans. If you're not worried about that, it's a great name.
  • I'm not a fan and i totally thought it was pronounnced See-Mus.  Sorry.

Me too. Is it "say-mus"? NMS.

  • Love the name.....love that its ethnic and different and that I've never heard it before...Def go for it and if pronunciation is an issue maybe look into different spellings of the name...lots of luck!

  • I knew a friend who had Seamus as a middle name-- i think that might be a little 'safer' in terms of pronunciation and whatnot. :)
