WWYD re. breast ultrasound

Late in my pregnancy I found a little roundish hard lump on one of my boobs. It was right near the surface and easy to feel, like a pea or a pebble. The doctor thought it was a blocked milk duct but wanted me to get it checked out after the baby was born, so I had an ultrasound.  They couldn't really tell what it was but were pretty sure it was indeed a blocked duct or a cyst of some sort.

They wanted me to come back in 6 months for a recheck. I can't feel it anymore so at my annual visit my OB said I didn't have to go if I didn't want to, he didn't really give me a definitive yes or no. We just switched insurance to a high deductable plan, this ultrasound would cost some big bucks out of pocket, so that's a big deterrent. Would you get it done for peace of mind or skip it?

  • I would definitely go. ?I would hate for you to kick yourself down the road if it progressed into something worse. ?I'm sure it's nothing, but better safe than sorry!

  • hmmm.. thats a tough one. I am leaning towards going ahead and doing it as well....but is there any chance you can have your OB or MD take a look first?

  • Me personally I would go & get it checked out for peace of mind. I also work in cancer research so that might factor into it as well. We too are on the HDP. Not sure how yours works but ours we don't pay anything up front. Everything is billed to the insurance first (even though they won't pay for anything until you meet the deductible) & they will send you the claim stating the charge. I received the claim from our insurance far sooner than I have received a bill from the doctor.  Then I use money from my HSA to pay the doctor. I was also told if you don't have the money the doctors will work with you to pay in installments. Plus for me I am all for meeting the deductible so the rest of my bills are free since that's one of the big benefits of the HDP for us.

  • I think it would be a tough decision for me too. I tend to be a worrier though, so I think I'd end up doing it for piece of mind.
  • I am a worrier by nature, so let me state that up front.  If I were in your shoes, I'd want to rule out any problems.  I just wouldn't want that hanging over my head.

  • I'm a worrier, too, but I am going to respectfully dissent and say I wouldn't get it.  If you can't feel it there's a 99.9% chance it's gone now.  I was worried I was being flip so I posed the dilemma to the mammo tech here and she agreed with me.  Good luck with whatever you decide!

  • I hear you on the high deductible-- we are on the same thing now. But, for peace of mind, I think I definitely would. I'm sure there's a 99.9% chance it is was just a blocked duct, especially with it being discovered while you were pg, but at least you would know for sure, you know?

  • Thanks all! Lots to think about.

  • I am going in for my first exam at a breast center (a more thorough exam than what they do at the MW's office-not exactly sure what it will entail) and I am all kinds of anxious about it... so I am going to say, yes, get it checked.

  • I would go get it checked.  I go to the Breast Center yearly for exams, mammogram and ultrasound.  If I found something in there, I would not rest until I knew exactly what it is and that it is not going to cause problems.  I have a horrendous family history of breast cancer, so I am over the top paranoid about it.  It would be worth the money for peace of mind.  Once you get it rechecked, you get to put it behind you and not ever have the "what if" thought crossing your mind.
