I think I have the flu, my fever is over 101. I called my son's pedi to see what over the counter remedies I could take and they told me that I was not allowed to breastfeed if I have a fever. This is contrary to everything I have read about continued breastfeeding while you are sick since you pass antibodies to the breastfeeding baby. Should I listen to my pedi?
Do you know what medication would be okay?
Re: Breastfeeding w/flu
Wow, that would suck! Another reason I'm glad I give formula. When I got sick I handed DH the baby and went to bed for two days!
Hope you feel better soon. DH and I were passing something back and forth for two months, we were obsessive about washing our hands and neither kid ever caught it.
I've been sick four times now since DS was born, and he hasn't caught anything. He must be taking ALL of my antibodies away from me, because I usually don't get sick.
Both my doc and the pediatrician said I could take Tylenol for fever, aches, etc., and the pediatrician gave the okay for cough syrup (Robitussin). The only thing they cautioned against was decongestants--if you're trying to dry out phlegm, you are going to dry out everything, including breast milk!
Be careful, wash your hands, and feel better soon!
