Snarky and T-TTC

Grrr

So I found out on Friday that I'm not immune to chicken pox. Never mind that I had them when I was 10. I guess I'm one of the 5% of adults who are not immune after having it.

I told my principal this morning and asked (like Mnkari suggested) if we could send a letter home to parents about being extra viligent with the kids, a resonable request seeing how we've had four chicken pox cases in the past month, two of them being in my room.

She won't do it. Won't even give me a reason why, just says we can't do it. Grrrr.

Re: Grrr

  • what?   so does that mean you can actually catch them again?   if so, Yikes!

  • WTH? Biitch

Chrys - did they not do the blood tests to check for immunity? That sucks - I guess it's too late to get the vaccine :(

  • I can't believe they won't do that!  What a crock.

Could you find a big mouth parent who you could casually mention that 'sick kids need to stay home' to, then they might spread the word?

  • That is just horrible!  Would a Dr's note make any difference?  Maybe you could get your Dr to write something up that speaks of the dangers and how the parents need to be notified?  Honestly, I could see something like this come back in a lawsuit if a pg teacher were to catch the chicken pox and the school did nothing to prevent it.

    Seriously!!!!
  • It would be a very good idea to ask your doctor what you can do.

I am CMV negative (also bad to get douring pregnancy).  My Dr. wrote a note to modify my work schedule to keep me out of certain areas to lessen the chance that I'd come into contact with it.

Granted you could come into contact with these things anywhere, and often the kids don't even look sick.  Still you would think it would be worth it to minimize the risks!

Or what they recommend you do to minimize the risk to you and the bean.

  • I wouldn't take no for an answer, especially if she can't give you a good reason.  Is there a law or something?

I would think you could find something on the internet from somewhere legit (CDC?) about chicken pox and risks to you and baby and print it up and march in there with it.

    I'd be furious.

    Isn't shingles chicken pox too?

I've had it twice too. The second time was not fun.

I hope you find a blabbery mom. Are you allowed to email parents or do you have a class website?

  • I'd try to take this up a notch - the superintendent maybe?  There's just a liability issue here that I don't think the principal is really appreciating that maybe someone in higher management would.  Sorry you have to deal with this. :(

    Agreed.  Or maybe your Union?

And my sister had them 3-4 times when she was younger.  I can't even imagine what it's be like as an adult, let alone a pregnant one.  Unbelievable.

I've never been tested for immunity before. And like most, I'd just assumed I'd be immune because I had them.

  • I'm a Catholic school teacher so I don't belong to a union and our super. is a whore, no joke. If I emailed the parents I'd get in big trouble so I may try to spread it through the parent underground.

All I know is, if there is another case I'm not coming into work. The principal knows the danger so I don't know why she's now not caring that I'm not immune. It's no one's fault that I'm not but she could at least try to protect me.

    imageLilypie Third Birthday tickers image
  • That sucks Chrys - My RE didn't even ask - she just sent out the blood and told me it was required. Maybe the Doctor's note route - I think they are required to give you different duties in cases like this. GL!!!
  • My grandpa got the chicken pox every time one of his children got it (4 times).  I would be upset too that the principal won't send out a letter.  I would think it would not be a huge deal for the school to send out a general letter stating that there have been several cases of chicken pox recently and that there is a teacher who is currently pregnant so if you notice that your child has any symptoms of chicken pox please see their doctor.  Who knows why the principal won't do it.  That sucks.  :(
  • I had chickenpox for the first time at 24 and it wasn't pretty. I can't imagine how dangerous it is to get it if you're pregnant. GL with spreading the word. Stay away from those sick kids!
Me: 44 DH: 42. DS born healthy at 40 weeks 8/24/09. TTC since then with no luck or ART. Surprise BFP 8/6/14... MMC @ 8 weeks 4 days... Miss you everyday sweet baby angel.
  • My MW said that if anyone else gets it I have to come in within 96 hrs and get some hemoglobin shot (not vaccine per say) to protect me. She also thinks the parents need to know. We'll see what my principal says.
