Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Would you feed your baby braunschweiger?

My MIL says that 'all babies eat braunschweiger' and doesn't understand why I don't want to feed it to our little one.  It seems unnecessary to me to feed him fatty meat, when he can eat regular lean meats. I dunno. Maybe it's just because I think the stuff is gross.

Has anyone heard of feeding it to babies though?

Re: Would you feed your baby braunschweiger?

  • Absolutely freaking not.  I don't eat that shiit, I'm certainly not giving it to my baby.  Barf.

And no, I never heard of that.  Sounds like some German OWT.  And I'm German, so I can say that.  ;)

  • What is braunschweiger?

Ummm... yeah... I don't know what that is... A fatty meat of some kind?  DD doesn't get fatty meats... We just poach / steam chicken breasts and lean beef and such...

  • It's liver.  It's sold with lunchmeats.

I gag just thinking about it.

  • I wouldn't do it regularly, but I might consider giving a taste - not a whole serving, just a taste. ?Of course, he might like it, and then there'd be trouble... ?I guess it just depends on how you feel about sausage in general. ?I mean, it's gotta be better than a french fry or chicken mcnuggets, right? ?People feed that stuff to babies all the time...
  • I guess I'm just baffled by the 'all babies eat it' comments.  She just can't understand why I don't want to give it to him, or why I think it's weird.  I've never heard of people feeding that to babies.

  • Since it's liver, it could be that babies used to be fed it a lot, back in the day, as a good source of iron. (It's a stretch, but I'm all about giving the benefit of the doubt. I agree though, ick.)

Yeah, we don't feed Ben that crap either, but I see your point.

  • Yeah Seans. ?I mean I don't know if I would do it, but if it would be a battle with OP's mom, maybe it's not worth fighting over. ?

I'll be honest, as a kid (not a baby, mind you) I loved braunschweiger and liverwurst - loooved them. ?Then I found out it was made from liver and got seriously grossed out.?

Good point!  Perhaps you could tell MIL that your kid gets plenty of iron from other sources (formula, an iron supplement, lots of beans, etc.) and she would back down...

  • Lol I don't even know hat it is!

  • Maybe back in her day kids needed extra Iron?  AJs on formula right now so he's getting plenty. I'll just keep politely saying no.  Although she bought some and brought it over this weekend...

  • I would give her a small taste while I'm eating it, but I wouldn't feed it to her regularly because it's really rich.  I haven't known of anyone feeding it to babies but I'm sure someone does.

On a separate note:  I will never not feed something to DC just because I don't like it; who am I to assume she will like/dislike all the same foods as me?

That's not the full reason of why I am not feeding it to him.  It just doesn't seem like something he should be eating to me.  I feed him plenty of things I don't like.  The kid eats 4 times the veggies I do. :-)

  • It's really, really good. Basically, it's pate. A soft, creamy spread that's made with pork liver. Delicious on pumpernickel with spicy mustard. And I make a great dip, mixing it with cream cheese and putting it in a pumpernickel bread bowl. Yum yum yum.

And my pedi specifically recommended it for Joseph when his iron was low.
