I too would say 15/16 but my SS who is 13 almost 14 has been getting drinksa t Starbucks since he was like 9. Ick-if it was just me and him he was not allowed to get anything with coffee, but I have since given up that battle.
My girls ask all the time ( 11 & 12 ) but I don't really let them but I also limit their sodas and sugary drinks too. They don't need any pick me ups...they are hyper enough.
I'm Hispanic so I was drinking coffee and milk (cafe con leche) since about junior high. This was the 70's and there was a report about coffee stunting your growth, so there was a huge uprising about teens drinking coffee.
Personally I have given SS coffee but he turned 14 so I don't think it's bad. The way kids drink caffeine nowadays I don't think a cup of coffee every now and then is horrible.
You know, I'd rather let my kids drink coffee (probably decaff) instead of drinking sugary sodas or chocolate milk.
I was 13 or so when I started drinking coffee (cafe con leche). My DD was about the same age. My SSs are 17 & 11 and they like cappuchinos and coffees. I don't think this is anything to fret over, but that's me.
Yeah, I agree with you that I think of it as an adult drink but unfortunately with the explosion of Starbucks the drinkers have become younger and younger. It annoyed me when BM would send SD gift cards for Starbucks at 12...DH would exchange them with her for the money value but she started drinking coffee before she started living with us at 12.5. I did not like it but it's not worth the battle. And honestly, so many kids drink 2 or more sodas a day so 1 coffee is no more caffeine.

All of our kids (15, 12, 10, and 8) like to drink coffee. They don't have it more than once a week or so, and generally 1 cup is all they were after, so don't have a problem with it. Not any different than them having a mountain dew or whatever, in my mind. They're allowed one of those any time we go out to eat, or one/day on the weekend, so I don't mind the coffee.
Also, there are some who think that caffiene actually helps kids with ADHD - as it has the opposite effect on them that it has on non-ADHD kids. I keep hoping it may slow our youngest down!

DH and I don't drink coffee so she isn't able to get it here and we don't go to starbucks (that often). I don't even think that she would like the taste of it honestly. I was offered coffee when I was 14 or so by my grandmother but it was an Italian household so she served coffee after dinner every night.
We do also limit the amount of sugar and sodas that SD consumes.
