I saw below that T has bad eczema. ?How do you deal with it? ?
?Orion has very, very bad eczema on his legs and it's really gotten out of control lately. ?His entire legs are covered in red welts. ?We smother him with aquaphor at every diaper change, only bathe him every 2-3 days, switched to a hypoallergenic detergent, stopped using dryer sheets, etc. ?and it seems to have only gotten worse. ?DH and I were talking about trying to clothe him in only cotton pants and see if that makes a difference. ?I really don't want to use steroid cream on him but I feel so bad every time I look at his legs.

hmm...did you only use the hydrocortisone cream once? ?And he hasn't had anymore bad flare ups? ?I've been so hesitant to use it but if it just takes once or twice then it might be worth it. ??
We went to the pediatrician as well and were told to use the same lotion. DS has flare ups and we use it on him and the prescription lotion when it is really bad. We also give him a bath every 3rd night so his skin doesn't dry out.
piping in late:
if the red welts are really bad, he could have a bacterial infection- do they almost crust around the edges? esp behind his knees and anywhere else there are creases? this is actually part of the eczema- not anything like impretigo or anything contageous. i hated the thought of steroid cream, too, but it might be needed at some point. we have a tube of that on hand and a tube of antibacterial cream (both perscription) for bad flare ups that won't go away. we don't use them regularly, just when environmental changes or anything else might cause huge flare ups. also, i have found that limiting his intake of dairy can help. so much skin stuff in these guys is subtle allergies. for truitt, there is nothing otc that clears his skin up when it gets bad. it is just too sensitive.
for daily maintenence, we do use aquaphor. we use all unscented california baby products. even the perfumes in aveeno can irritate him, although their sunblock is the only one we've used without issue... one thing about the california baby is they are so pure, they don't even use the chemicals to make the product clear/colorless. it just is the color it is. they are as natural a product i've found that is also effective... i use all free&clear laundry detergents (sometimes bio-friendly like 7th Generation, sometimes Tide or All) and fabric softeners. i don't use any fabric softener on his bedding. i found that makes a big difference. even the free and clear will make his face all red and chapped if i use it on his pillow cases...
hope that helps a little. the thing is it's different tricks for different kids. they're all so unique. i think tru's is a little more extreme but not like clinically extreme and i do think some of it relates back to the lactose allergy he had as an infant... monitor a little of what O eats when he flares up really bad and you might be surprised.
DD has terrible eczema, unfortunately she gets it from me. I've had it my entire life but I'm hoping she'll outgrow hers. From personal struggles over the years I found using anything with mineral oil or petroleum products makes it worse over the long term for me. Not saying that's true for everyone but they also irritated DD's.
For DD I use the occasional steroid cream and try to keep up with heavy natural body creams. Lately it's been alba kukui nut for me and the aloe body balm from the body shop for DD.
Thanks everyone. ?It's nice to hear we're not the only one's still battling this. ?I've been thinking maybe DH and I are doing something wrong. ?I think we might try the steroid cream just to get this latest flare up under control. ?I'm definitely going to look at some of the maintenance creams suggested as it appears the aquaphor just isn't doing it for us anymore.
?Rayskit - we've been trying to link it to diet but just can't find a correlation. ?We eliminated all sorts of items we thought might be aggravating it but with no success.?
