anyone Hypoglycemic (low blood sugar)?

I have been hypoglycemic since I was 12. I can uaully monitor it pretty well and can tell when I am going to have a sugar crash. However, with this pregnancy, it has been terrible! I can't seem to kee my sugar stable and am shaky, sleepy, lethargic.... it's a mess!

I called my OB, she just recommended eating more protein, but I really already eat alot!

I had this problem with jack too, and I think it added to my weight gain.

I was hoping for some more tips, I'm having a tough time! Anyone else?

  • I am, but I seem to be opposite. It doesn't really bother me while I am pregnant.  How about some lean protien optons like the whites of a hard boiled  egg or cottage cheese?

  • Shawnsweetie.... Thanks for the response, I figured it was a long shot that someone else was in the same boat.

I eat eggs for breakfast almost everyday. Sometimes I eat oatmeal, but I always have a source of protein as well, like a hardboiled egg with it.

Just yesterday, I made an egg white omelet with ham and cheese (mega protein) and still had a huge crash 2 hours later.

I just hate that feeling... and it worries me driving and stuff....

    I dunno, I guess I'm just rambling.

    Thanks again!

  • I'm not hypoglycemic, but I LOVE protein shakes.  Have you ever tried one made with the protein powder you can buy in health food stores?  I like to make a big frozen one (like 32 oz) and you can actually sip on it for like an hour.  Something like that might be a good option for you a couple times a day.

  • I have always wondered if I was hypoglycemic- how do you get tested for it?

And, ditto what sitrkate said about the protein shakes- I buy the EAS protein powder in bulk at Sam's club- the vanilla is sooo good! ?I think they have chocolate and heard they have strawberry too but have never seen it.?

  • Try working some more complex carbs (whole grain bread, pasta, etc) into your diet.

    That's always helped me.

I've een hypoglycemic since I was 15, and like you, can usually keep it on track with minor modifications to my diet.

When I was pg, it just kept dropping. The protein thing never seemed to really help me, but my old family doc recommended complex carbs. Since they take longer for the body to break down into glucose, they tend to keep your sugar at more stable, elevated (normal) levels.

BTW - with DD, my hypoglycemia got a lot better by the middle of 2nd tri. It was like I just woke up one day, and my body said "okay, got it figured out now".

    GL!
  • I am and I am having more problems this pregnancy than with DS.  I am going to talk to OB on Mar. 3 to see what he thinks I should do.  Good luck and sorry I don't have any suggestions yet :-(
Our kids are 19mths apart and we LOVE it!!

Married to my BFF on 8.13.05 (after dating 5 years)!

DS born 2.14.08. DD born 9.30.09.

  • I have it and it was much worse when I was pregnant.  I passed out cold at work because of it when I was 8 months pregnant.  I always struggle with sugar crashes about two hours after eating, and it does not matter what I ate.

Proteins do help more than carbs, but I always have something sugary, hard candy, or a soda close by to help if I feel a crash coming on.  unfortunately, morning sickness makes it worse because of not keeping food down.  My only advice is to eat frequently.  Small meals every 2-4 hours will keep you from crashing.  Also, always have something with sugar in it within easy grab in case you feel the crash coming.

I will say that eating more small meals during the day is good for keeping your sugar levels stable, and will not lead to excess weight gain if you eat healthy things.  Good luck.  I know it is NOT fun at all, and another thing to have to worry about.
