Question for Teachers

Was your sub with you in the classroom for your 1st week back? Mine won't. It danwed on me the other day that my 1st day back can't really be my 1st day back! I will most definitely have to go in atleast 1 day before my 1st day back to lesson plan, make copies, prepare supplies and just get my mind back into school mode again! ARG I am not happy about this!

So teachers, tell me what your first week (or few days) back to school was  like!

Re: Question for Teachers

  • Sorry, when I went back it was a new school year so I didn't have to deal with this. But you're totally right- you definitely need a day or two to get situated! I would think your administration would be supportive of this, since it's in the best interest of the kids. I would bring it up as soon as possible and let them know your concerns. GL to you!

  • I didn't go back until a new school year either...sorry.

But, you will definitely need time before you are back to teaching again. It may also help to do a couple 1/2 days...makes leaving your DC a little easier (who am I kidding...)

  • Since this isn't your first year, going back should be pretty easy.  My first week back was only hard because I missed DS and taking naps in the afternoon.  I didn't have any time with my sub before I went back so I called to see where he had left off and anything that he was in the middle of doing.  It was nice because he finihsed up a chapter (test and grading) so I just had to start on a new chapter (I teach math). The kids were better than I had expected so I was pleasently surprised. It helped that the first couple of days I did beginning of the year activiites (ice breakers, getting to know you stuff), reviewed my rules, expectations, etc.  This helped the kids to understand who I was and what the rest of the year was going to be like. You'll be fine!  GL!
  • I'm not sure. I hope the sub will still be there. I'm going back next month.

  • I hit the ground running...sub over!
  • I went back for the last 3 weeks of school to keep my benefits.  The hardest part was leaving my baby.  Going back to school wasn't hard at all compared to that.  I didn't have a sub for any amount of time when I went back and I really didn't do anything to prepare.  I just went in and took back over.  It wasn't a big deal at all.  Good luck!
  • I went back mid-Jan. I was emailing with my sub during my leave (I teach HS and she was a retired teacher who was a little out of the loop).  I asked her where she was leaving off, and I prepared to take over from there.  I used that first Monday back to get reacquainted with the students (I forgot some of their names) and just BS a little.  I stayed that afternoon and photocpied everything I needed for the next day and rest of the week.  Getting back into school mode was definitely tough after having been out for so long.  You'll be surprised how quickly it all comes back.  When I walked into school that day, it was like I never left...
  • I'm having my sub prepare lesson plans for the whole week. I'm also going to go in for a few hours the week before to make sure all supplies/copies are ready. It will give me a chance to drop off DD with MIL who will be watching her while I go back to work.
