I'm so nervous about switching from formula to milk, knowing that milk isn't a "complete" food. Right now, I'm still giving him 2, 7oz bottles of formula and one bottle that's half and half. I have no idea if he's eating enough food to make up for the reduced amount of formula he's drinking. Also stressing about what to feed, and how much to feed?
What does your toddler's (one year old) daily menu look like, including snacks?
What's a toddler portion size?
Re: Feeding a toddler?
You don't have to go cold turkey...
www.wholesometoddlerfood.com has some stuff about portions and their nutrition needs.
They usually say 16-ish ounces of milk a day, and so that sounds like that would be right for the amount of formula he's drinking to change it to milk slowly over the next month..
A "serving size" I think is about the size of the palm of their hand. SMALL.
Just make sure to offer a variety of foods for him. Try to get some protein, some fruit and some veggies in every day. Not necessarily at every meal, but at least get it otu there every day.
I honestly don't remember how much Ben was eating then. So I can't help with specifics... It was probably something like oatmeal and fruit for breakfast, some crackers or snacky thing as he played in the morning, then a snacky type lunch - cheese, fruit and cereal bar, some yogurt - and then after a nap more snacks like fruit or crackers or graham crackers, and then for dinner some pasta, or grilled cheese, peas or green beans, more fruit (he's a fruit nut)... maybe another yogurt...
If your gut is telling you not to change your son over to milk yet, I say you go with your gut. I had the same instinct, only to be asked by the doctor later when I sheepishly admitted that Rose was 13 months and still on formula as her main liquid, if I could keep her on it until she's 18 months and perhaps until she's two.
Rose has always had issues with eating. We back slide any time she's ill or in a lot of teething pain. If it weren't for formula, there are many days where I don't think she'd get any kind of nutrition.
I vote you stay on formula if you're concerned at all that your kid still isn't eating a balanced diet or getting enough table food.
