BF moms: How much weight did DC lose after birth?

DS was born Thursday and weighed 7lbs, 5oz. 4 days later, at his 1st pedi appt, he's 6lbs, 15 oz. Pedi wants to see him again on Thursday for another weight check.

If you BF, just wondering how much weight your DC lost after birth before the weight went up again. I think BF is going well, but of course I'm a little nervous, I'd like to see DS gaining.?

Re: BF moms: How much weight did DC lose after birth?

  • My oldest lost about a lb (she was 8 lbs 4 oz at birth and I want to say at the lowest she was 7 lbs 7 oz).  My baby only lost 3 oz but I was also still nursing my oldest when she was born so the milk was there from her from the beginning.

  • DD went from 7lb 2oz to 6lb 5oz. 2.5 weeks later, she made it back to 6lb 13 oz. At about a month, she was up to 8lb. It was a tough road for us. I did have to supplement for a little while until she gained weight at my pedi's request. The good thing supplementing is that DD was used to the bottle early.

  • Birth: 7lbs 5 oz

When we left the hospital: 7lbs

    5 days after birth: 6lbs 13oz

    1 week after birth: 7lbs 8oz

    2 weeks after birth: 7lbs 13oz

  • DD weighed 6lb 10oz at birth, and weighed 6lb 5oz at her first pediatrician appt 5 days later.  At her second pediatrician appt when she was 12 days old, she weighed 7lb 7oz.  She gained a ton that first week (18 oz), so I wouldn't worry too much.  :)
  • He weighed 9lbs 4oz at birth. When we left the hospital he was about 8lbs 9oz. My pedi told me it's normal to lose between 1%-9% of their birth weight within the first week. He'd gained it all back and then some at 2 weeks.
  • My DD was 7 lbs 5 oz at birth, and 6 lbs 13 oz when we left the hospital.  Today at her pedi appointment she was only 6 lb 15 oz . . . so we have to go back in a week for another weight check. My pedi said that most BF babies have regained birth weight by 14 days, but that sometimes it can take up to 21 days.
  • DS was 6lb 12.6oz at birth.... at his 3 day appt he was 6lb 1oz.... we had to go for a lot of weight checks because he wasn't gaining as quick as they wanted him to... we had breastfeeding issues in the beginning. We had/have to use a shield-- now he is a whopping 9lb 12oz!

  • DS had lost 6oz at his one week pedi appointment. At his two week appointment he had gained 7oz.
  • born at 7lb 13 oz.

when we were discharged from the hospital 7lb 6oz.

his first check up 2 days later 7lb 4oz.

i took him in a few days later and he gained a bunch. but that was when my milk supply came in better and he just kept gaining really good.?

  • I think your ped is just erring on the side of caution.  If your ds is only 4 days old, your milk probably JUST came in, which hasn't given him very long to really gain.  I have Insufficient Glandular Tissue, and my ped didn't have a problem w/ lack of weight gain until Connor didn't get back to his birth weight at 2 wks.  Erin was supplemented from the 2nd day due to painful latch and I knew enough w/ Katelyn to know when I needed to start supplementing her, so she was 1 oz shy of birthweight at 2 wks, which her ped was happy with.
  • Born at 7.14, down to 7.7 when discharged and was back up to 7.11 at 4 days old.  After that I'm not sure, but he was 10lbs at one month.

  • DD was 7 lb 2 oz at birth, down to 6 lb 7.4 oz at 4 days, and was just under her birth weight at 2.5 weeks.  Pedi said all was fine.

  • He weighed 6 lb 6 oz and at his 3 day appt was 5 lb 13 oz. I can't do math right now but pedi said that was better than expected.?

  • birth: 8lbs 9oz

    4 days: 7lbs 7oz

    1 week: 7lbs 13oz

    1 month: 11lbs?

  • Lily was almost 10 lbs at birth, lost about a pound and it took her a good 3 weeks to get back up to her birth weight. ?Our previous pedi freaked me out about it at 2 weeks, but then I talked to a LC and she said it was perfectly normal for a 10 pound baby to take longer to reach her birth weight.?

We changed pedis and Lily was up 3 lbs the next month. ??

  • Birth: 7lbs3oz

    After 2 days: 6lbs5oz

We got a lot of pressure to supplement with formula, which we resisted (this was not our normal pediatrician). It's perfectly normal, and is not a big concern if they are not dehydrated or very jaundiced.

I'm glad we didn't - He nursed a lot on the colostrum, and my milk came in full force by the third day. He was over his birth weight in about 10 days.

  • She was 8lbs when she was born.  4 days later she was 7lbs 9oz.  A week after that she was up to 9lbs.
  • Unfortunately, DS lost almost 13% of his body weight and I had to supplement with formula until he got back to his birth weight.
