Babies: 9 - 12 Months

is this a reaction to whole milk?

We just started DS on milk yesterday.   We are making his bottles with  6 oz of formula and 2 oz of whole milk.   He has eaten yogurt and cheese before and never had any reaction.   He's been on Enfamil for ages now(as a supplement while I EPed...I switched to FF in November)   and never had a problem.   The only thing new is whole milk.

He woke up with a slight rash on his face that we thought was just irritation from rubbing his face on the sheet and his lovey(he's a tummy sleeper) but it has gotten redder and now on both cheeks...they are very red and have little bumps on them.

Sound like a reaction?   he's never had a reaction to anything before so this is new to me.

  • Could be. Back off and see what happens? I thought the standard was to wait until age one.

  • Hmmm.  It would be very weird, since the allergen in milk would be in cheese and yogurt as well.  Actually, I just asked an allergist friend beacsue I was curious, and he said the same thing.

Still, I agree with the pp.  Stay away from it untilt he rash clears and then re-try.  It would be a shame to assume a milk allergy incorrectly, you know?

our pedi said to start phasing it in slowly so he'll be on it completely by his 1 year appt.    it's going to take 20 days to get him on 100%milk

  • Our baby has a milk allergy and when she was on regular formula she had a rash all over her cheeks that went all the way to the back of her ears.  As soon as we switched to soy formula, it cleared up in a few days.  Sounds like this may be a milk allergy as well.
