Babies: 9 - 12 Months

CIO.. advice

Due to DS creating a habit out of getting up several times a night (and us unknowingly reinforcing this habit by going in at his every scream) we are going to do be doing some CIO tonight. Not total abandonement by any means, we've decided to wait 10 min and go from there. All his needs are being met during the day, he has FOUR lovies (!!), solid bedtime routine, no teething, etc.. so we're committed to this CIO business, and praying it will work.

My question is this: he pulls up, and as we don't want to pick him up and start from square one, do we just give him verbal reassurance at the door? Or put him back down to laying down? We KNOW he'll be standing up in his crib when it reaches this escalated point... so we're torn with if we should put him laying down or not.

This is going. to. suck.

Re: CIO.. advice

  • We've been fortunate enough to not have to do CIO, but when he does wake up or refuse to go to sleep, I lay him back down, give him his lovey, and say "It's time to sleep. Good night." I don't take him out of the crib.

  • yeah... we never take him out of the crib - but he is slowly training US to put him back down when he stands up. We know he can lay himself back, but he won't. I just wonder if, in the midst of all this CIO, if that's just another thing we have to accomplish...
  • We just did it and it made it a million times worse if we went in there. I did ferber at 7 months and it worked great then. Now she know's I'll just be back in a few minutes. I wouldn't pick him up to put him down  though, because it will make him think he's getting out. GL. I think you'll both be much happier in the long run. It only took 2 nights for us.
