Houston Babies

You have *got* to be kidding me

Normally, MIL isn't too bad.  As far as MILs go, she's great.  In this case though, I think she's batshitcrazy.

When we found out we were pregnant, we immediately told all the grandparents, come up with your names because Marion has seven g'parents and we didn't want any duplicates or hurt feelings or whatever.

Josh's family uses "granny" a lot - Josh two grandmothers are both and they still fight over who is just "granny" and who is "granny first name" -  and that's what we always called them on my mom's side of the family too.   But I told my mom she shouldn't be called "granny" because she had always signed cards and such to my dogs as "grandma" so that's what she was to me.  She was fine with that as she said she didn't feel like a "granny."

So pregnancy comes and goes and MIL *still* has not picked out her name.  We've got Papaw and Marme, GranMan and BelleMere, Grandma and Grandpa and Libbie.  Josh and I had been suggesting to her quite repeatedly that she be "bebe" as in short for "Labebe" her real name.

Over Christmas, she told us she wants to be called "Grandmommy."  We completely ignored that suggest as it's just flat out weird.

Mar just got a v-day card from her, signed "Grandmommy."  Lady, the only "mommy" in this family is me!  Guess it's time for that talk...

Re: You have *got* to be kidding me

  • Grandmommy sounds like it's out of Casa Blanca or something.  Very strange!

  • My evil grandmother is "Grandmommy", so it has a totally negative conotation for me.  Why are you not feeling it?  If I didn't hate my grandmommy, it wouldn't really bother me.

My mom has chosen "Grammy" and I think it sounds like she should be a cocaine dealer.

  • I think it's because my MIL would be super happy if I just dropped Mar off on her door and picked her up in two years.  I think she's secretly hoping Mar would drop the "grand" and call her "mommy."

For some reason, "grandmama" doesn't bother me as much as "grandmommy."

  • i think grandmommy is a little weird too.

  • It's too long for me :)  I like the short and cute names.

    Nana

    Nannie

    Nonie

    Grams

    Grammy

    MiMi

    GiGi

  • I don't think the name is inherently weird, but I do agree with kdw that it's too long. It'll be forever before she could actually say it.

  • My parents are Oma and Opa - borrow from another language school.

His are grandma and grandpa - Lucas can say these words.

  • I called my favorite grandmother "grandmommy" when I was little... probably until I hit my teens actually. In my childhood logic, my mom was mommy so mommy's mommy was grandmommy and of course she was married to grandaddy.

I don't think that you need to be in a rush to pick grandparent names. My SS calls my MIL "grandma nancy" and so he calls my mom "grandma margaret", but my mom did not want that to be what DD called her. She wanted to be grandmommy. So when Eloise started talking and we were visiting my mom she was really pushing grandmommy and repeating it all the time... but when Eloise finally tried to say it, it came out as Mimi. So now she's Mimi because Eloise can say it.

After that, I suggested to my MIL when she visited that if Eloise called her Nana, then she'd be able to say her name right away. Eloise learned that name super fast and now my nephew calls her that too.

I'd never heard of the grandma name "Grandmommy" before reading your post.  To me, a grandmother wanting to be called that comes off as a bit needy.  I think you've got her pegged.

  • My mom go's by Oma because she said it is eaiser for the baby to say. She will just sit there and say "Oma" over and over, it's cute! Also, when we tell the baby we are going to see Oma or Oma is coming over he get's a big smile on his face.

Grandmommy would make me mad to. You're right, you are the only Mommy in the house!

  • My MIL is Bebe and it's easy to say and it suits her.

Grandmommy doesn't bother me as much as it's long and seems a bit strange.

My mother is trying to get Joe to say Gammy instead of Mawmaw... for some reason she doesn't like maw maw and that's what Emi calls her.  :)

  • i could see it, if maybe she was YOUR mother.... but for your MIL to want to be called that..... like you said.... the only mommy here is you! I would feel the same way!!!!!
  • Totally not weird to me - my mom's parents were "Grandmommy" and "Grandaddy" to us, and that's what my parents use now.

  • It isn't my favorite and if it bothers you, then I would change it to something else.  I could see if that name was already established with other grandchildren, it might not be so strange, but yeah, in this case, not so much ok with that.
