Babies: 0 - 3 Months

diaper question from 2nd tri:

I am wanting to register for a few packs of diapers, I figure if nothing else people will know what kind we want to use. I'm wondering though about how long baby stays in each size (I know all babies grow differenly) just hoping to get an idea. TIA!

Re: diaper question from 2nd tri:

  • our baby was 8lbs 7oz at birth and stayed in newborns for 6 weeks. ?i'd register for a large / value box of newborns and size 1s.

ETA: he was 11lbs 4 oz at his one month appt.?

  • You will probably use at least one box of newborns otherwise go with size  one. You will use them eventually. The pampers sensitives are good for new moms because they have an indicator strip for when they pee.
  • DD was in Newborn for about 2 months. She has been in 1's ofr about 1 month, expect her to be in those for a little while longer.
  • I'd say get one bag/box of newborns and the rest in size 1.  DD was in size 1 until a few weeks ago.  She was in newborn for about a month.

I highly recommend Pampers Swaddlers.  She's never had a leak, and they always keep her dry as a bone.

  • my ds was in newborns for 7-8 weeks

and is in size 1's now. they are kinda big on him so im sure he will be in them for a while.

  • I didn't register for any diapers and didn't have to buy any until DD was over 3 mos old.  She was in newborns for a little over a month cuz she was so small (she actually wore premie diapers--and yes, someone gave me a pack--at first).  I wouldnt register for any, personally.  I'm sure you'll get some as gifts.  I know I always include a pack whenever I go to a shower.  You also may not know what kind works best for baby.

  • Beware of having too many diapers of one size! DD only went through a few packs of newborn diapers before she was up to size 1, then it seemed like she was in size 2 before I knew it. I gave away so many diapers to pregnant friends of mine.

FWIW, she was born at 7 lbs, 10 oz., but had doubled her birth weight by 10 weeks of age.

  • DS was in newborn size Pampers for about 2-3 weeks (born at 7lbs 12 oz).  I noticed that at the hospital, they were using size 1 Pampers which were fine, but I liked the way the newborn size fit him.  DS is 9 weeks now and 13 pounds so after we finish the current box of size 1 Pampers, he's moving up to the next size.

  • We've been thru 1 pack preemies, 4 packs of N's and are now in 1's. I like the Pampers Swaddlers. Don't like Pampers Baby Dry. My sister uses Luvs and they're good, too. Oh, and DD was 7lbs. 6oz. at birth.
  • we had enough newborns with what they gave us at the hospital.

we probably started size 1 a little early - but, it was fine.

i'd skip NB, and ask for 1's

  • DD was 7 lbs at birth. She stayed in NB's for 8 weeks.  She could have stayed longer, but I was afraid she'd hit a growth spurt and I would be stuck with TONS of NB diapers. She's still in Size 1s with plenty of room to spare. She, however, is only in the 5th percentile for weight.

As far as registering, I would register for 1 of the Jumbo packs of Pampers Swaddlers. The sensitive kind have the wetness indicator line, which was a blessing in the beginning.  I would register for 2 or more of the Size 1s.

We still have diapers we haven't been able to use yet (in size 2).

  • We only used disposables at the hospital, but DD used size 1s then...you might not need newborns at all.
  • Like you, we wanted to stock up on diapers prior to DC being born, but don't get too many of one size - I would recommend one box of each size.  For newborns, I highly recommend the Pampers Sensative b/c they do have the line that changes color when it's wet (we called them magic diapers) and it was a life saver those first few weeks when we were trying to learn what each cry meant.  Highly recommend them.

We also bought two boxes of size 1 and our son has already outgrown them (at two months), so we have one box leftover.  We are now in size 2-3 - our son weighs almost 16 pounds.  Also, what someone taught us about diapers, is that you should move over to the next size a pound early so you don't have leaks/explosions - which we found to be helpful advice b/c we didn't listen at first and had many clothing changes as a result.  So our advice - don't buy too many of one size b/c babies grow fast.
