I feel like when Dylan is playing, he rarely cares if I am near him...so I feel lost as to what to do. I like to watch him, but really, he can chew on the same toy for days, so it gets old. When the TV is on, I don't feel like I am paying enough attention, and then he watches it too. I tried reading or puzzles, but he always distracts me (in a good way). So really, while your little one is playing on the floor, or even in a bouncer/walker/saucer, what do you do? Assuming here that it is not cooking, cleaning or other house work...
Re: what do you do at play time?
I sit with him and talk about what he is doing. He still loves to put things in his mouth, but he's also experimenting with cause and effect. I sing to him and we do fingerplays (I do!) We have a shiny metal bowl and I drop some practice golf balls inside. He loves the sound and the visual of the balls in the shiny bowl. He reaches into grab them, etc. I toss his teething toys in the bowl as well. I also lay him across my thigh so his knees are bent and baring weight. I hold things up in the air so he can reach when he's sitting by himself. We dance to music. These are a few things we do. I take him around the house and he bangs on things with his hands. My baby loves to bang his hands on top of the toaster oven and the table. There are also times that he plays by himself. I'm in the room but not playing with him. It's good for him and I need a break sometimes!
?One of the best things you can do to help your baby learn language is talk about what he is doing. Just like a pp said, label the things he is playing with or interested in. "Johnny is playing with a ball. He's putting the ball in his mouth. Look at the ball." etc.
