Babies: 9 - 12 Months

what do you do at play time?

I feel like when Dylan is playing, he rarely cares if I am near him...so I feel lost as to what to do.  I like to watch him, but really, he can chew on the same toy for days, so it gets old.  When the TV is on, I don't feel like I am paying enough attention, and then he watches it too.  I tried reading or puzzles, but he always distracts me (in a good way).  So really, while your little one is playing on the floor, or even in a bouncer/walker/saucer, what do you do?  Assuming here that it is not cooking, cleaning or other house work...

Re: what do you do at play time?

  • I just will sit on the ground with Odyn & watch him play. A lot of times I will say things like "see the red ball" or "look, this is round" to try to do some word association. He is to the point now that I can ask him to hand me something & he will! It is fun to see him learn. But he likes to be independent too & that is a good thing.

  • If I'm not working (I freelance at home on the days I'm not in the office), I like to just lay on the sofa and watch her while I have some tea or coffee. Honestly, it's so rare that I don't have to wash her dishes or get her lunch ready or something like that while she plays that if I have some downtime, I really just do "nothing."

  • I agree w/ pp.  I will sit with him and tell him what things are.  This is a doggy, doggies say "woof", sort of thing.  I work all day, so when I get home I do like to spend time interacting w/ him. Sometimes he just likes to play by himself and he will let me know that.  When he does, I usually do house work or just sit on the couch...I need some time to unwind too!

  • We do some interactive things like roll a ball back and forth, read books but like pps stated, a lot of it is watching her and pointing things out.

  • I sit with him and talk about what he is doing. He still loves to put things in his mouth, but he's also experimenting with cause and effect. I sing to him and we do fingerplays (I do!) We have a shiny metal bowl and I drop some practice golf balls inside. He loves the sound and the visual of the balls in the shiny bowl. He reaches into grab them, etc. I toss his teething toys in the bowl as well. I also lay him across my thigh so his knees are bent and baring weight. I hold things up in the air so he can reach when he's sitting by himself. We dance to music. These are a few things we do. I take him around the house and he bangs on things with his hands. My baby loves to bang his hands on top of the toaster oven and the table. There are also times that he plays by himself. I'm in the room but not playing with him. It's good for him and I need a break sometimes! ;)

?One of the best things you can do to help your baby learn language is talk about what he is doing. Just like a pp said, label the things he is playing with or interested in. "Johnny is playing with a ball. He's putting the ball in his mouth. Look at the ball." etc. :)
