Babies: 9 - 12 Months

odd question from friend re: ER

My friend who has 2 kids (4 and 2) asked us how many times we have been to the ER for the baby.  Um none?  He was surprised, their kids had been at least 5 times for each kid by 8-9 months he said.  Granted, their dd had a problem with chronic ear infections so I think that added up but the other things were for all sorts of crazy stuff.  (think stuff up nose, things swallowed, falls...)

So how many times have you been to the ER?

Re: odd question from friend re: ER

  • once to the ER but we have been to urgent care a ton of times

  • None- knock on wood
  • never.  It aggrivates me when people rush and bring their kids to the ER for every little thing.  There are obviously time you need to go, but some people take it too far.
  • none--if I have a concern I call my pedi and she's great about getting us right in.  Haven't had any major concerns, tho--just normal stuff like colds.

  • ER - none

Urgent Care - 3x (2 for ear infections and 1 for pink eye).  Poor DD always seems to get sick on Saturday mornings.

  • those who have been to urgent or ER, what for?  If you don't mind sharing of course.
  • Not yet......touch wood.
  • Hmm, guess we're in the minority here, but we've been twice - however, both times were after we had called our pedi and we were advised to go either to the ER or an urgent care.
  • Once, but we went to see our pedi. first and they sent us to the ER.  DD's cord fell off and it was a huge mess of infection so she was admitted for nearly a week.

  • We have not been to the ER w/ Ben yet.

With my daughter, I rushed her to the ER when she was about 6 weeks old.  She was choking really badly and stopped breathing.  I had to keep blowing in her face the whole way there to get her to breathe again.  It was the scariest moment of my life.

That I understand.  It is people who go without calling their pedi first, or go for little things like just a cough.

  • Never been to ER, and I took her to urgent care for an ear infection once, but only because it was a Saturday and I wanted to get her on amox. ASAP.

My H would totally be rushing baby to ER if he were her primary caregiver.  He's kind of a nervous parent.  I don't know if it's because she had a heart defect or if it's because he's a first time (and rather young) dad, but I tease him that if he took her temperature and it was 99 degrees, he's been packing her up for the hospital.

  • Twice... Once after our car accident (by ambulance) and the second time she was bleeding from the mouth (persistant, not gushing) It turned out to be a canker sore and she had an ear infection on top of that.
  • Once and we were admitted immediately. It was for bronchiolitis he needed oxygen and breathing treatments. We were in the hospital for a week. Unfortunately we were out of town and so I spent New Years in the hospital in Nebraska
  • I've never been the the ER or to Urgent Care for either kid (knocking on wood.)?

I have a good friend who, IMO, totally overreacts and takes her kid to the ER for things that wouldn't even?warrant?a call to the doctor if they were my kids. Things like her kid falling and bumping his head- kid is acting fine, but oh my god! What if he did major damage? Let's take him to the ER ASAP just to get him checked out so he doesn't end up with brain damage!

    None- knock on wood

    Ditto

  • Twice. DS had super bloody poop all of the sudden and it was a weekend with no walk-in clinic. The first night, the doc said there was nothing wrong- totally normal. I took him to my doc the next day because bloody poop is NOT normal and my doc had the on-call pedi meet us in the ER 10 minutes later.

  • twice- the first time we had to call an ambulance when he was a month old, he was barely breathing.  He was in the children's hospital for a week then.  The second time we took him to urgent care b/c he was wheezing and had a very high fever.  B/c of his breathing, they wouldn't see him at urgent care and made us take him to the ER.  I HATE going to the ER, and will avoid it at all costs.  Hopefully that's it for us.

  • reading these makes me so thankful that we haven't had to deal with any of these situations.
  • For treatment...never.  To see my mom, who is an ER nurse,....lots.  When DD had pneumonia in Nov, we went to have my mom and SIL listen to her and then we headed on over to the After Hours clinic.  It is nice to have family members who work in the ER when you have questions, but I try to go to the clinic at all costs, as it is cheaper and they are crazy busy the way it is.

  • Once, on Thanksgiving.  She had rolled off her futon the week before and was bobbing her head involuntarily.  It got a lot worse on Txgiving and freaked me out.

ER said it had nothing to do with the fall, but they decided it was encephalitis caused by a virus.  That didn't make me feel any better!  A neurologist continues to monitor her, but the EEG turned up normal, the head-bobbing went away, and nothing more has happened ::knocking on wood::.

  • Twice.  Once when I fell while holding DS and he hit his head.  It was after hours on a Friday night so we went to the hospital instead of calling the pedi.

The second time was on Christmas Day.  Our pedi told us to take him b/c his cold had worsened and he had labored breathing.  Glad we did b/c he had a touch of pneumonia and we were able to get it cleared up pretty quickly after that.

  • I've been two times in the same week for almost 105 temp. The second time she was admitted for a few days. Her urine goes back into her kidneys causing UTI's. She may need surgery for it.

  • Once for DS, but that was only 6 months ago. Found out later it was severe constipation.
  • twice. Once when E was about 3 weeks old, there was a strand of my hair wrapped around his finger, and it was Saturday. I texted the pedi, who said to use tweezers (when we tried to get it off, it pulled tighter and bled) and when the tweezers didnt work, told us to go to the ER

The second time was yesterday. I fell on the ice holding Ethan. I just wanted to be sure he was ok. He was
