Has anyone had success w/ sleep methods other than CIO?

DS doesn't STTN and mom and dad are sleep deprived!  He is up every 3 hours or so and it isn't because he is hungry, he just screams.  He has acid reflux and is on medication and sleeping in an inclined position, so I'm not sure if it is because of the AR or not.  Did you use a sleep method that worked for you?  I'm not against CIO, but I don't think that I can physically watch him cry and not try to comfort him.  Any suggestions?

  • What meds is he on? Have you talked to your pedi about trying something different or adjusting the dose? That sounds to me like he's hurting, and you obviously don't want to leave a hurting baby alone to cry in his crib. Other sleep methods aren't going to be any more effective if that's the problem, so if it were me, I'd probably address the AR first.

I thought this was the issue too, but we've been to the Dr. twice for his AR and both times I felt like a whiny mom because my baby isn't sleeping well.   He is on 1mm of Zantac 2x/day.

  • My DS was STTN and then suddently just stopped and would wake up very upset several times a night (but not hungry). He is also on Zantac. Turns out Zantac is VERY weight sensitive and he had outgrown his doseage. He is also on 1 mm 2xper day. He weighs 13 lbs. Within two days of upping his doseage, he was back to his old self.
  • When he wakes up at night, is he behaving like reflux is the problem? Is he arching his back, or pulling away from the breast/bottle when you try to feed him? Is he fine during the day, or does he have problems then, too?

I know what you mean about feeling whiny. I had DS#1 in to the doctor three times in three months because he never stopped crying. We tried prevacid, which helped some, and adjusted the dosage a couple times, and finally our pedi told me it was just his personality. That was right before he started pooping blood and we realized he had a dairy sensitivity, which finally resolved when I cut cow's milk out of my diet.

You know your child. If you think he's in pain, don't worry about looking like a psycho mom. Ask about increasing the Zantac dosage, or switching to a PPI like prevacid.
