First food and poo question

Yesterday we gave my son his first solid food: mashed bananas.  About 15 minutes later he poo'ed: it was bright yellow and SO smelly.  Then he did the same again about an hour later, and once more this morning.  He is otherwise breastfed.  Is this normal?  If not, is it a sign that either: (1) he's flat out not ready for solid foods, or (2) bananas bother his tummy?

 TIA!

Re: First food and poo question

  • I'm no doctor, but I can tell you that solid foods definitely change the poo paradigm!?

I've seen everything from brown to yellow to green. And "stinky" is a very kind understatement.

I don't think you should worry.

However, our pedi told us to start with single-grain oatmeal as the first solid food. It digests much easier. Once they get used to that, you can mix in a little baby food or mashed bananas.?

  • When DS first starts any new food his poo turns all different colors and smells.  It usually takes on a hue of whatever he ate.  He almost never has the same poo more than 2-3 days in a row.
  • We started DS with bananas as his first food. It didn't really change his poo. Now however his poo will change color depending on what he ate. If he has avocado his poo is green. Mashed bananas is a fine first food to start with and are very easy to digest. It sounds to me he tol the bananas just fine.

  • I would have started with something easier to digest. DS had a hard time with banana - it's a very constipating food. I doesn't sounds like your DS was constipated though.

Poo can be any colour of the rainbow once you start solids!  It's like a surprise everytime you open the diaper ;)
