I wouldn't call it a RULE... just a good rule of thumb under ideal circumstances. ?There are lots of people that introduce pacifier/bottle nipples early on and have no problems breastfeeding.
Babies rarely involve ideal circumstances. ?You just do the best you can with what you have.?
My LO is fine with both and we started introducing a bottle at 2 weeks. Once in awhile when it's been a little bit since she's been on me, I think she might be a little lazy and it takes her a little bit of fussing, but I think she's used to it now for the most part.
It really has nothing to do with timing and everything to do with your baby. DD#1 took a bottle of EBF no problem, DD#2 REFUSED all bottles. DS has taken a bottle.
I introduced the bottle to DD#1 and DD#2 at around 3 weeks PP. I introduced the bottle to DS at 7 weeks.?

We gave DS a bottle really early too. He also had to use a shield. He weaned himself at about 7wks. He now no longer uses it. I threw them away. It was a great day.

I was aware of the 'rule' and tried very hard not to have a bottle introduced early. DS lost too much weight and the nurses strongly discouraged me from using the thing where you put the tube next to your nipple so he had a few bottles of formula in the hospital. When my milk came in he just wasn't an effective nurser so for the first 2+ weeks I had to feed pump and then feed the pumped milk in a bottle. He has never had nipple confusion. We give him one bottle of EBM most days so that he doesn't forget how to use the bottle because he very much prefers the breast.

I, too, am looking forward to this day! I've been trying to pull it off after a few minutes, and sometimes it works...sometimes, not.

Re: I was not aware of the 4 wk rule....
As long as he takes both, no worries! ?You are fine...
My son still refuses the bottle and he's almost 6 months...sigh...?
