Parenting after a Loss

weight gain awesome, body temp regulating sucky..

poor little cuppa.  she's gaining weight like a champ (and i've got the constantly engorged boobs to prove it), but she still can't seem to maintain a warm enough body temp.  today at the pedi it was down to 96.4 rectally.  we have to take it twice a day and call if it goes below 96.  we basically have to keep her super bundled at all times (except for feedings since she will not stay awake long enough if too cozy).  i wish i knew how to make this part better for her.

  • I know that controlling temps is a big thing for ones as little as your Cuppa.  Michael had a hard time with it at first too.  I used to always keep him in a sleeping bag, over his outfit and then swaddle him too.  The sleeping bag made it like he had two blankets on without have to try to get two blankets to stay on him.

  • Poor thing! I didnt have the same problem but I second the sleeping bag, they are sooooo warm.
  • my DS was much bigger than cuppa at birth and he was in the NICU for 5 days with blood sugar and temperature issues. ?i know how much it sucks.

when we finally got home (and keep in mind this was JULY in freakin KANSAS!!!), we would put him in a long sleeved onesie, footed jammies with socks, mittens and a knit hat (hat is important! ?most heat is lost from head!!), swaddle in a recieving blanket and then a fleece swaddle-me on top of that. ?every few hours we would go and put his swaddle-me in the dryer for about 15 mins on low. ?it would get just warm enough that it gave his little body temp a boost.

    hang in there!!!?

  • Kendall ended up in an isolette in the NICU because she couldn't maintain her temp.  When we were weaning her out of it we had to dress her in a onesie, sleeper, double swaddle, and a hat.  It kept her nice and toasty.
