BFing moms who went dairy free

DS is super gassy at night, he and I are having a really hard time sleeping. He is not really showing signs if a true milk allergy so I think this is just a dairy sensitivity thing. I  decided to go dairy free today to see if it makes a difference. I know it can take up to two weeks to really see any difference, but I wondered what your experience was. How long did it take you to see results? Any advice on good/bad diary free things to eat?

Re: BFing moms who went dairy free

  • Andersen started showing signs of improvement after about 5 days.  I didn't fully cut out dairy at first -- just "raw" dairy -- I still ate hard cheeses and food with milk as an ingredient.  We've since found out he has MSPI, so I'm completely dairy- and soy-free.

Whole Foods has a great selection of dairy-free foods.  I was able to find dairy-free margarine at my local grocery store.  Things labeled as "vegan" won't have any dairy in them either.

It's a bit hard at first, but I don't miss it at all anymore...except for pizza.  I do miss that (which is weird because I never really loved it before).

  • I know I saw results before 2 weeks but I don't remember quite how long it took to see results.  Maybe 4-5 days.  GL!
  • I saw improvement within a week, but didn't see the full effect until about 3 weeks later.

Both my DDs are intolerant, not a true allergy either. We cut out dairy, but they seem okay with the soy. We drink soy milk (well, DD#1 &I) and if you read the labels, you can find things labeled vegan and kosher are dairy free. Also, watch things like bread b/c some brands contain whey, which is a milk byproduct.

Here is a list of milk based ingredients that I refer to often:

Tofutti brand things are GREAT (ice cream, sour cream, etc) and Dr Praegers (veggie burgers, fish sticks, etc) in the frozen aisle.

My other advice is just to skip cheese. I haven't found any truely dairy free cheeses that aren't disgusting.

    Good luck!

  • I think I went dairy free for about three weeks.  I slowly reintroduced dairy (except for milk, which I substituted for Lactaid) and didn't really see any difference.  I kept with the Lactaid (but otherwise ate dairy), began using Dr Brown's bottles and began supplementing DD with lactose-free milk and the gassy problems resolved themselves eventually.  We had no problems introducing dairy into DD's daughter later on so I don't think dairy was the real culprit for her gas/fussiness.
  • Way late, but hopefully you'll check back.  My kids have milk protein intolerances.  I noticed an improvement w/in 3 days.  Their skin cleared up and they were much happier.  It just got better every day after that.

I highly recommend going to Whole Foods to identify DF items that you can later find in your regular grocery store.  Read the ingredients, look for milk obviously, but also whey and casein.  Baked goods, lunch meat, "non-dairy" creamer, bread, etc. are the main culprits.  You can't even trust soy cheese, most except for vegan and Tofutti brands have dairy protein in them.  I highly recommend Tofutti brand "cream cheese," american "cheese," and sour "cream."  It definitely helps to use these and not feel totally deprived.  GL!
