Help! Nasty head cold... what can I take?

I promise I googled, but there were so many conflicting answers!

I know that Tylenol is okay... Sudafed too, right? But what is good and safe for congestion? Claritin?? Does it have to be regular, with no letters after it... Like no Tylenol cold and sinus...

This started this morning... and I'm miserable. I can't breathe. I don't know if it's a cold, or maybe allergies?

Can anyone shed some light. My OB office is obviously not open and I don't think I can go to sleep like this.

  • This is right off my list from the doctor:

Sudafed (regular Sudafed, not Sudafed PE), Tylenol Cold & Sinus, Claritan, Chlortrimatron, any Robitussin (regular), Chloraseptic throat spray or dorps, Ocean Mist Nasal Spray, Benedryl Sinus, Benedryl (regular), Patenol eye drops or Vicks Vapor Rub/Patch.

Also, FWIW, they seem to stick with the Sudafed recommendation before anything else and then Tylenol for fever/achiness.  I never get sick, but have gotten EVERYTHING this winter!  I don't take much medicine normally so I don't know how Sudafed compares to anything else, but it seems to do the trick.  I'd try that one first.

  • Oh thankyou!!!! You are saving my DH a long night of sniffles and complaining. Big Smile

I rarely get sick either.... I'm not sure if this might be allergies though too... I've been doing an awful lot of sneezing!

    Thank you SO much again!

  • Yeah, you can take regular Sudafed, the kind you need to get from behind the pharmacy counter (pseudoephedrine) - not the PE kind sold on the shelf (phenylephrine).

My doc strongly recommended sticking to single ingredient meds versus the different cold/flu varieties because it's easier to keep track of what you're taking. I usually took Tylenol and Sudafed, sometimes Robitussen if I had a bad cough, and the ocassional Benadryl at night. Use a cool mist humidifier and VapoRub at night. Hope you feel better!

  • no problem!  i am taking some sudafed myself tonight!

  • Just remember, you can't take Robitussen, Sudafed, etc until the 2nd trimester (which I guess technically you're in). I've been MISERABLE for the past 4 days with a head cold b/c all I could take was Tylenol (since I'm still in the first trimester). I have never missed DayQuil and Advil Cold and Sinus so much in my entire life! So much for a hot, sexy Valentine's day for me, huh? Ha ha.

  • Why can't you take Sudafed in the first trimester?  I was never told that... and I did take it in the first trimester, and my MW was fine with that.

  • My ob-gyn nurse told me not to take Sudafed until the 2nd trimester. Guess every doctor is different. Basically they told me to take Tylenol, lots of fluids and plenty of rest. 4 days later, and I'm finally feeling better!
