Nasty diaper rash

Justin has another bad case of diaper rash, and I've ordered a refill of his prescription diaper cream.  But isn't there something I can do in the meantime, like applying Mylanta directly to it or something?  I thought there were a couple home remedies people mentioned here but for the life of me I can't remember them now.  Help please!

Re: Nasty diaper rash

  • Some babies respond well to aquaphor... and free balling it for 10 minutes or so.

We used a blow dryer on Brandon's butt.  But he was 2 weeks old at that point and didn't want to "move" so I'm not sure how Justin would do with that.  Also, baby wipes can make it worse... so you may want to just use a wash cloth.  For us, the butt paste worked.  Desitin was useless.

Also, I wonder what vaseline would do.  They're saying it does all sorts of good things for the skin so I wonder if it would work.  Anyone tried it?

  • Letting him have a little rinse/bath in the tub with some warmish water with a bit of sea salt in it helps it heal faster.  Just a little sea salt - so it's only as salty as tears (any saltier and it would sting).  Then let him air dry for as long as possible.

  • We tried the Mylanta remedy and it worked, but the diaper rash would come back as soon as we stopped applying it - which I'm guessing is not a problem for you since you're getting an Rx anyway.  Anyhow, apply Mylanta directly to the hiney, let it air dry completely and then apply diaper cream (we use Aquaphor, so any OTC is fine until you get your prescription).

  • Baking soda bath--1/2 C baking soda in a little bit of water. It's soothing. We also use walgreens brand jock itch cream. Works like a charm.

  • We use Desitin Original paste (40% zinc) with much luck.  If it is yeasty looking or caused by antibiotics (DD has never been on antibiotics, so no experience with that) our pedi said to use Lotrimin.  It works within a day on yeasty rashes.   Air time is great too.  We let DD go nakey for 30 minutes, twice a day for regular rashes.  It works better than any ointment.

  • I usually love Desitin original, but Justin has open sores right now including bleeding.  Ugh!  I'm skeptical of Aquaphor or Vaseline because I need to dry this up and fast.

Thanks for the tips......I'll see what helps!

  • We had good luck with the baking soda bath and put the vaseline on top of the diaper rash cream.  That seemed to make a big difference.
